A SCHEME to give free laptops to carers is being launched in Plymouth.

Organisers say the aim of Computers4Carers is to alleviate the isolation that some people feel when looking after a family member.

They are appealing for donations of laptops from the public or Nike Air Max Shoes local businesses, and for carers to apply for the equipment.

Carers campaigner Lesley Gross, who is co-ordinating the scheme in Plymouth, said: "One of the biggest problems that some carers face is isolation because they might not be able to leave the house because they have someone to care for.

"If they have a computer it immediately decreases this isolation because they can get in contact with the outside world and chat with carers from all over the country."

Carers who have no knowledge of computers can gain free training through city support group Active8 launched last month, which Lesley is also involved in.

Active8, run by the Workers' Educational Association (WEA), offers free trips and creative activities for carers, the people they look after, former carers and anyone older than 50.

She said: "It's fabulous we can get these computers for free and then, if people need help setting them up, we can train them for free as well.
