Bettendorf High School's SAVE (Students Against Violating the Earth) club is coordinating a collection of used athletic shoes for the Nike ReuseAShoe program. Any brand of athletic shoes can be recycled. Established in the early 1990s, Nike's ReuseAShoe program collects old, wornout athletic shoes for recycling, transforming them into three types of raw materials made from recycled athletic shoes and manufacturing byproducts: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole and fabric from the upper. The raw material, called Nike Grind, is used in creating athletic and playground surfaces as well as some Nike products.
