Self-development...
This was one genre that I never bothered to even check during all of my frequent visits to Barnes &
Nobles and public libraries. I learned about the existence of such books for the first time when SNSD Seohyun appeared on 'We Got Married' with CNBLUE Yonghwa. Although I'm not a fan of SNSD and could care less about if Seohyun's "innocence" on camera is real or not.....
atleast on 'WGM' this girl ROCKS with all her incomprehensible manner and twisted intelligence that drag around Yonghwa by his ear.
Since then I began to notice many of these self-development books whenever I wandered into a Korean bookstore here. The titles of these books...they really make you stop and think about how you lived your life so far..and how should you live it for a better one. I wonder if this is a new thought in me as no longer a teenager...OTL
Anyways, I've spent the past week tackling my first self-development book:
행복한 대화법 (Guide to Happy Conversation) by 신영란
The book is divided into 5 sections:
1. 유쾌한 대화의 10가지 기본 메뉴얼 (10 Simple steps to a delightful conversation)
2. 어떤 인간에게도 통용되는 명품 대화법 (Sophisticated conversation guide that works for anyone)
3. 직장에서 꼭 필요한 사람으로 남는 14가지 지혜 (14 wisdom to be VIP at work)
4. 비호감을 호감으로 바꾸는 이미지 전략 포인트 (Image changing point to change - to +)
5. 화술의 심리학 (Psychology of Conversation)
Among the five, the first section left me with the most memorable points.
* 듣는 사람이 편하게 말하자.
(Speak to make the listener comfortable)
한사람이 이야기 할수 있는 시간은 길어야 2분 10초, 보통은 1분 30초.
2분이상 길어지면 듣는 쪽에서 부담을 느끼기 시작한다.
One person can speak for 2 min 10 sec at the longest, 1 min 30 sec on average.
Listener begins to feel uncomfortable if it exceeds 2 minute.
* 오해는 바로바로 풀지 않으면 독이된다.
(Misunderstanding becomes poison if you don't set it straight right away)
오해가 생겼다면 해명은 되도록 빨리, 솔직하게!
건강한 사회생활을 위해서 꼭 기억해야 할 수칙!
If misunderstanding occurs, explain quickly and honestly!
This is the golden rule for healthy social life!
* 이미지를 망치는 입버릇.
(Habits that harm your image)
"...같다"는 표현은 매사에 자신이 없고, 자기 주장이 확실하지 않은 사람들이 무심코 쓰는 말.
좋으면 좋다, 싫으면 싫다고 확실하게 표현하라.
말버릇은 그 사람의 이미지와 직결된다.
Expressions such as "...I think," "like" are thoughtlessly used by people who are not confident and unsure of their position.
Clearly express what you like and don't.
Speaking habit is directly linked to the person's image.
* 곤란한 상황일수록 적극적으로 변명할것!
(Make excuses when you are in tricky situations!)
1. 타이밍을 잘 포착해야 한다.
(Find the right timing)
2. 변명을 하려면 정직하고 간절하게 해야한다.
(Make honest and sincere excuses)
3. 겁먹지 마라.
(don't be afraid)
내가 변명을 하는것은 나로 인해 기분이 언짢아진 상대방을 위로하기 위해서 하는것이지 결코 나 자신이 비굴해지기 위한 것은 아니다.
상황을 풀어나가는것. NOT 피하려는것.
Making excuses is to comfort the listener who is disappointed/angry because of me. It is not to bring myself down.
Excuses are to solve the situation. NOT avoid it.

*Lying is good.
American psychologist Gerald Jellison believes lying is crucial to the normal functioning society.
He calculates an average person lies every 8 minutes.
*Make Proposal Sexy!
The given examples were a block of CHEESE but apparently...they are the most romantic expressions in the world for the people being told them by the person they love.........
ehm...okay.
*Secret to make the person you love happy:
Remember the things he/she shared and gave up for me, and never stop to express your thanks.
*Remember the most random things about the person you love.
MBC Example:
Hongki: We can't meet this weekend, can we?
Kelly: Why?
Hongki: You said you have to go to a conference.
Kelly: I said that?
Hongki: I don't need you to tell me to find out. I'm your stalker, remember?
....this was directly from the book. I just changed the names to give you the super cheese effect. OMG
Apparently this would be the best vitamin in the world for me, who is exhausted from work.
Ha..Ha..Ha.....

Anways, I really want to read another self-development book called "20 year old! Beat the World."
