In January, we bemoaned the state of tech-related stories that use so much jargon that they are practically indecipherable.

In that column, we defined terms including "LTE," "MMO" and "e-reader." In our second Digital Savant mini-glossary, we'll take a look at more tricky terms.

Memes: Quick-spreading jokes, ideas or styles that tend to be humorous and are often tough to track back to a single source. Cat images with funny captions ("I can has cheezburger?") and "Rickrolling" (fooling someone into watching a video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up") are two examples of popular Internet memes. Knowyourmeme.com tracks and explains the latest memes.

Animated GIFs: ".gif" is a format for a kind of image made for the Web, but an animated one combines multiple frames to create a little silent movie. In recent years, animated GIFs have become popular memes. Many people capture footage from TV shows or movies and convert them to animated GIFs to show off a specific hilarious visual (like the character Lane Pryce dancing on "Mad Men" at bit.ly/H2GdD9) or to convey an emotion.

The Cloud: Just another way of saying "the Internet." Storing your data "in the cloud" just means those files are online somewhere. Cloud-storage services like Dropbox, Microsoft's SkyDrive, Google Drive and Apple's iCloud all offer to store your digital files on a company's servers. Often you get a certain amount of space free and pay for extra space if you have lots of files.
