ONWARD è un film di animazione Pixar Disney che arriverà nei cinema a marzo 2020 e ci trasporterà in un mondo in cui vivono elfi, unicorni e altre creature magiche.

Onward è un film di animazione realizzato al computer in 3D americano prodotto da Pixar Animation Studios per Walt Disney Pictures. Onward è diretto da Dan Scanlon, prodotto da Kori Rae, e l'uscita al cinema è è prevista per il 6 marzo 2020.
La Pixar ha annunciato un film sul "mondo fantastico suburbano" alla D23 Expo nel luglio 2017, con la regia di Scanlon e la produzione di Rae. Il film è ispirato alla morte del padre di Scanlon quando Scanlon e suo fratello erano più giovani e affronta la loro relazione. Scanlon ha deciso di scrivere la storia dopo aver ascoltato una clip audio di suo padre. Il 12 dicembre 2018, il titolo è stato rivelato così come CS Anderson che è stato annunciato per aver co-scritto la sceneggiatura con Scanlon.
Il film di animazione è ambientato in un mondo magico popolato da elfi, troll, sirene, centauri, fauni, satiri, gnomi, folletti e tutte le altre creature mistiche. Questo mondo, tuttavia, dove una volta la fiaba era la realtà, sta perdendo il suo senso di magia. I suoi abitanti usano macchine come telefoni cellulari e automobili invece della magia. Atteso in sala per il marzo del 2020, Onward è il nuovo film della Pixar. Chiamato a raccogliere il testimone (pesantissimo. di Toy Story 4, questo nuovo lungometraggio animato propone un'ambientazione ancora una volta inedita, com'è tradizione per gli studios di Emeryville: stavolta il mondo sembra proprio il nostro, con case, automobili, smatphone e tutto il resto. solo che non ci sono esseri umani perché i personaggi sono tanti tipi diversi di esseri fantastici che noi ricolleghiamo alle fiabe (elfi, troll, unicorni, pegasi, fauni, satiri, gnomi e chi più ne ha, più ne metta. Insomma, ancora una volta Pixar ha centrato il punto, creando l'ennesimo universo di riferimento originale e interessante.
I due protagonisti sono due fratelli, Ian e Barley Lightfoot, due elfi che decidono di mettersi in viaggio per scoprire se nel loro mondo esiste ancora un po' di magia.
Il trailer si preoccupa più di introdurre il mondo in cui si muovono i protagonisti che la storia in sé e quindi il primo sguardo avuto sul film gioca più sull'impatto visivo e sul design dei personaggi e la loro interazione.
Per l'edizione USA, la Pixar non ha badato a spese e ha deciso di assoldare un cast di voci di sicuro impatto, assegnando a Tom Holland e Chris Pratt - che per inciso sono anche due colonne del Marvel Cinematic Universe grazie all'Uomo-Ragno e ai Guardiani della Galassia - i due ruoli principali ma sono della partita anche Octavia Spencer e Julia Louis-Dreyfus, due caratteriste molto amate e di grande esperienza.
Il regista del film è Dan Scanlon, animatore e autore 43enne che ha diretto anche Monsters University, nel 2013, e che ha partecipato alla realizzazione dello storyboard per Cars - Motori ruggenti e diversi sequel dei grandi classici animati della Disney (tipo Tarzan 2, Il gobbo di Notre-Dame II, La sirenetta 2 - Ritorno agli abissi.
In occasione della D23 Expo, Scanlon ha dichiarato che, per lui, Onward è un titolo molto personale che pesca direttamente dal suo vissuto: Mio padre è morto quando avevo un anno: non ho mai avuto alcuna idea di che voce avesse, sapevo che volto avesse grazie alle foto e ai filmini. Nel film, noi vogliamo raccontare la storia di due elfi, fratelli e adolescenti, il cui papà è morto quando loro erano troppo piccoli per ricordarselo. Grazie al quel pochino di magia rimasto nel mondo, i ragazzi si imbarcano in un'avventura che consentirà loro di poter trascorrere un ultimo, magico giorno con il loro papà.

Ispirato ad alcune esperienze personali vissute dal regista insieme a suo fratello, Onward – Oltre la Magia racconta la storia di due fratelli: Ian e Barkley, elfi adolescenti, lanciano un incantesimo nel giorno del sedicesimo compleanno di Ian per fare apparire magicamente il loro padre (o almeno metà di lui) fino alle sue distintive calze viola. I due si imbarcheranno poi in una straordinaria avventura per scoprire se nel mondo esista ancora un po di magia.
