The Osaka Gas Building is one of my favorite buildings in the world, not only for its architectural splendor, but also because of its contribution to the culture.
Architecturally speaking, The Osaka Gas Building is a masterpiece.
The building was built in 1933. The major design element is the beautiful combination of curves and the straight lines. It is called an art deco style building. But Yasui Takeo who designed this building denied the influence from an art deco style. He said “I arrived at this design only from the function of this building”.
This building contributed to culture of Osaka very much.
The contribution to the food culture is great in particular. There is a splendid restaurant in the top floor of this building. As soon as the gas Building was built this restaurant founded. It has offered the highest-level French food from those days.
This area was wounded severely for World War II.
However the building was almost unhurt miraculously. It was used afterwards as the accommodation of the GHQ (The general headquarters that governed Japan under the occupation). Recently it was registered as a registration cultural property in 2003.
The splendid building is the cultural assets which is already a work of art. I feel happy that I can visit this building anytime. To eat the curry and rice here at lunchtime is one of my pleasures.
