悪魔の帰還

もし自由が安全と両立しないのならば、大衆は安全を選ぶでしょう。

Since the "free" society is the one that is threatened by the demons,
it seems more than plausible to blame freedom and to expect delivery
from despair through the abandonment of freedom.

「自由な」社会は悪魔によって脅かされるものなので、
自由を悪者にして、自由の放棄によって絶望からの解放を願う
ということは、たいへんもっともらしく聞こえるのです。
