The majestic Poulnabrone megalithic tomb was built on The Burren between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago by the neolithic people who lived in the area at the time.

The tomb was used for burying the dead and also as a site for rituals and ceremonies.

The area once looked very different than it does today. It was mainly covered with pine forests with some open grassland, and the people who constructed the tomb would have grown crops and raised livestock to survive. However, extensive soil loss occurred in later prehistoric times, which created the barren and rocky landscape that can be seen today.
