１．サンタクロースは、雪やトナカイといったところから、寒い北国出身の
イメージが強いが、実はサンタクロースはトルコ生まれである。
Santa Claus has a strong image of being from a cold northern country because of snow and
reindeer, but in fact Santa Claus was born in Turkey.
２．といっても、実際はサンタではなく、モデルとなった聖ニコラスのことだ。
However, the actual Santa Clause was modeled after Saint Nicholas.
３．聖ニコラスは、3世紀後半、小アジアの古代都市、ミュラで生まれた。
St. Nicholas was born in Mura, an ancient city in Asia Minor in the second half of the 3rd century.
４．1071年、聖ニコラスの遺骨がコンスタンテイノーブルから北イタリアに移される時に、
ヨーロッパ中に彼の伝説が広まった。

or he threw gold nuggets into a poor house for three consecutive nights so that the three daughters
living there could get married, and so on.
６．聖ニコラスの生涯は不明の点が多いが、それらの伝説のほか、多くの善人の行いが
合わさって、サンタクロースが形成されたようだ。
There are many unclear points about the life of St. Nicholas, but aside from all the legends about
him, it seems that Santa Claus came to be, as a combination of the good deeds carried out by good willed people.
7．日本では、サンタクロースの方が有名だが、ヨーロッパでは聖ニコラスの方が
知られており、彼が亡くなった１２月６日は、「聖ニコラス祭」として称えられいて、
クリスマス前の行事になっている。
In Japan, Santa Claus is more famous , but in Europe Saint Nicholas is more known,
December 6, the day he died, is called the “St. Nicholas Festival" and is the event before

風習がヨーロッパでは一般的でない地域もあり、オーストリアのチロル洲では、
およそ30年前に、ようやくその習慣が始まったばかりだどいう。
