When it comes to softball, a soft ball, true to its name, is used.
２．この球技は１８８７年シカゴ商品取引所の記者、ジョージ・ハンコックが考案した
「インドア・ベースボール」（室内野球）がそのもとになっている。
This ball game is based on “Indoor baseball ”that was invented by George Hancock,
a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade in 1887.
３．それは偶然に生まれたものである。
It was born by chance.
４．１８８７年１１月、シカゴでハーバード大学とイエール大学のフットボールの試合が
行われ、イエール大学が勝った。
The Harvard - Yale football game was held in Chicago in November 1887, and Yale won.
５．両校の卒業生たちがシカゴのファラガット・ボートクラブに集まり、固唾を呑んで試合の結果を待った。
Both Yale and Harvard alumni got together in the Farragt Boat Club and anxiously awaited the results of the game.

古いボクシングのグローブを持ち上げ、近くにいたハーバードの卒業生に投げると、すぐに箒の柄で
打ち返した。
When the news came that Yale had defeated Harvad by a score of 17 to 8, one Yale alumnus
picked up an old boxing glove and threw it at a nearby Harvard alumnus, who promptly hit it back
with a broomstick.
７．ハーバード大学の卒業生のジョージ・ハンコックがこれを見て、冬に屋内で出来る野球を
思いついた。
George Hancock, a Harvard alumnus saw this and came up with an idea of “baseball” that
could be played indoors in winter..

This is the origin of the softball we know of today.
９．ソフトボールが1921年に日本に紹介されましたが、
第２次世界大戦後進駐していたアメリカ軍によって広がり、全国にだんだんと普及したそうです。
It is said that softball was introduced to Japan in 1921, but that it was spread by the US
military personnel who were stationed in Japan after the end of World War II and it steadily
grew popular throughout Japan.
