昨年末に新型コロナウイルス（SARS-CoV-2）が出現した当初から、これは細菌兵器として人為的に作られたという噂が広がっていました。いわゆる都市伝説というか、Fake Newsのたぐいですが。
偶然の一致だと思いますが、今から40年前にCOVID-19の出現を予言した本があるといわれています。それは、アメリカの人気作家Dean Koontzが1981年に出版したスリラー小説「The Eyes of Darkness」です。この本の中にWuhan-400（武漢-400）という名の生物兵器が登場します。その一部を引用すると、
They call the stuff 'Wuhan-400' because it was developed at their RDNA labs outside of the city of Wuhan, and it was the four-hundredth viable strain of man-made microorganisms created at that research center.
"Wuhan-400 is a perfect weapon. It afflicts only human beings. No other living creature can carry it. And like syphilis, Wuhan-400 can't survive outside a living human body for longer than a minute, which means it can't permanently contaminate objects or entire places the way anthrax and other virulent microorganisms can. And when the host expires, the Wuhan-400 within him perishes a short while later, as soon as the temperature of the corpse drops below eighty-six degrees Fahrenheit.
彼らはこれを「武漢-400」と呼んでいます。なぜなら、これは武漢市郊外のRDNA研究所で開発されたものであり、その研究所で作られた人工微生物の中で400番目の生存可能株だからです。
武漢-400は完璧な兵器です。人間以外には感染しません。他の生物は武漢-400を保有できません。梅毒のように、武漢-400 は生きている人間の体外では1分間以上生存できません。つまり、炭疽菌やその他の病原微生物のように、物や場所全体を永久的に汚染することはできません。さらに、宿主が死んで死体の温度が華氏86度以下になれば、その者の中に存在する武漢-400は直ちに消滅します。
でも、これはあくまで架空の話です。Wuhan-400は人間以外の生物には感染しないことになっていますが、新型コロナウイルス（SARS-CoV-2）はzoonotic virus（人畜共通感染性ウイルス）です。SARS-CoV-2は、たぶんコウモリ由来だと考えられています。さらに、SARS-CoV-2は、プラスチックや金属表面で数日ほど感染性を維持すると考えられています。
でも、偶然とはいえ、作家Dean Koontzさんの着眼点は鋭いですね。
