We just returned from a cruise. Despite the fact that the yacht was Norwegian, we were the only "locals" on board. We sailed south anywhere along calm Pacific, through the Panama Canal, and away north along the somewhat choppier Atlantic. It was an amazing experience. However, traveling with children is not amenable to writing or even note taking, so any cruise posts may take a little time to appear. Instead, I'll spend the next few days talking about United Arab Emirates – only those seven of them, starting with the easiest. Here is our Dubai trip story.
Never has the overused phrase "eclectic blend of old and new" so accurately described a city. Really! A short ride across Dubai Creek on a province (open boat, and with very finicky captains) exemplifies this perfectly. On one side, there's the fantastic old souk, which is partly hidden beneath made of wood planked roofs in narrow passageways; you'd think you were in India. Hyper-modern buildings with futuristic designs, on the other hand.
Valets park sizzling Ferraris and Rolls-Royces in the Mall of the Emirates! You'd think they were on their way to the Cannes Film Festival or some such! Too much? I believe so. (Of course, I may be biased.) There is no car parking in Norway. Nothing else will be valet. There are no serviced fueling stations. We're the masters of do-it-yourself.) Then there's Ski Dubai, of course. Inside a retail mall, there are ski slopes. Lifts are included. We did not participate. To be honest, we didn't feel the need after four months of cold temps and shoveling snow. Then there's Ski Dubai, of course. Inside a retail mall, there are ski slopes. Lifts are included. Every time we managed to pass Burj Dubai (presently Burj Khalifa, this same world’s tallest skyscraper), ominously going to remind me of a dental surgeon drill, I intended to stop as well as take the elevator to the top. But it was all too much that austere Scandinavian in the end. Perhaps another time. Instead, we looked at the other six emirates. Do you recognize them? Watch for Emirates about tomorrow.
