Two regiments of Highlanders fought in the American Revolution, the 71st Foot and the 42nd. The 71st foot seemed to be known as Fraser's Highlanders and was started in 1757 by the family of Lord Lovat, who had been executed like a traitor in the uprising of the 45. It was revived again in 1775 once the Revolution started. The 42nd Regiment of Foot, which in fact had been renumbered the 42nd in 1748, were originally known as the 43rd Highlanders. They were an infantry regiment within the British army. After the Jacobite Rising in 1715, the federal government of Britain couldn't keep an army in the highlands of Scotland. Men were recruited from local Highland clans which were loyal to people who opposed absolute rule, also known as Whigs. This didn't work, because it did not stop people from committing crimes. A militia was formed in 1725, and it was made from independent clans to maintain order within the countryside.
