Chase the ocean's giant, the Bryde's whale, in the sacred land of Mirissa! Mirissa Beach, located in the Matara region in southern Sri Lanka, is a popular spot for surfers, snorkelers, and divers, blending the glamour of resorts with the simple, local vibe. The whale swim began at 5 a.m., when the stars were still shining. The entire beach was enveloped in the pink of the morning glow and the silhouettes of palm trees, creating a moment of silence and anticipation. Then, boarding a chartered boat, we headed straight for the depths of the Indian Ocean. After 4 hours of cutting through the waves, passing dolphins and humpback whales, our main attraction, the Bryde's whale, finally appeared! We followed its sleek, missile-shaped silhouette for 20 minutes, keeping our distance. The moment our rhythms—the ocean, the whale, and our own—synced, the captain's "GoGoGo" signal rang out, and as we entered, the view cleared with a bubbling roar, and the majestic figure of a Bryde's whale appeared before our very eyes. 🐋 Its massive form approached us head-on, awe-inspiring.
