Who
For the first Hero Fundraiser Scholarship in honor of Perry Moore, the late author’s friends Andy Cohen and Allison Sarofim and his partner Hunter Hill gathered a smart set to honor Moore’s life and legacy. Attendees included fashion types like Julie Gilhart, Jenna Lyons and Hamish Bowles; artists, including Richard Phillips and Hope Atherton; and the downtown social swans Annabelle Dexter Jones and Sarah Sophie Flicker.
What
Moore was an executive producer of the Narnia films and, with Hill, co-directed the 2008 family drama “Lake City,” but he’s especially beloved for his 2007 young adult book “Hero,” the story of a gay teenage superhero. This writing scholarship will be awarded annually by the Hetrick-Martin Institute to an L.G.B.T.Q. college-bound student. The inaugural recipient is Kamal Mackintosh, who will pursue a degree in philosophy at Stony Brook University this fall.
Where
The second floor lounge at 60 Thompson quickly filled to capacity with stylish young things, trying to find a place to put the outer layers they’d shed on one of the season’s first summery evenings.
When
Downtown skipped the dinner hour to indulge in cocktails and canapés. The party sailed by quickly with heartfelt speeches from Cohen, Mackintosh and leaders from Hetrick-Martin, as well as a musical interlude from Scottish singer Angela McCluskey.
Why
The usually cheerful Cohen got serious when talking about the scholarship in honor of his friend. “Perry was a hero to so many of these kids — he would write emails back to every single reader who reached out to him — but he was also a hero to so many people in this room. So I think it’s time we all pay it forward like he always instinctively did.”
