マネージメントとの確執や
メンバー間の軋轢がバンドを蝕み、
解散の危機のまま80年代を終えた
彼らだった。
それぞれ、
思い思いの活動後に再び結集、
1992年に「Keep The Faith」をリリース。
折しも音楽業界は、
シアトルのNirvanaに代表される
グランジブームのまっただ中であり、
そんな時代背景の中、
彼らでさえも「時代遅れ感」が
否めなかった。
元々、聴き手に対して等身大の歌詞が
ウリだった彼らだが、
さらに一歩推し進め、
真理探求をのような曲を書くように
なっていき、
前２作のような
キャッチーなヒットソングは減り、
新境地に挑戦する意気込みを感じる。
賛否両論となったものの、
それまでのイメージを積極的に
変えることには大成功。
その背景に、
目まぐるしく変化する時代の中に
おいてでも、生き抜く術を身に付けた
ジョン・ボン・ジョヴィを
推測することが出来る。
この曲は、
デヴィッド・ブライアンのキーボードの音色で
幕をあけるアップテンポなラヴソング。
サビに向かって広がっていく展開が溜まらない。
コアなファンも納得の直球勝負の名曲であろう。
まだまだこの頃は、
ジョン特有の高音域もよく出ていて、
「If you were in these arms tonight
～もし、今夜、君をこの腕に抱けるなら。。。」と、
情熱的な感情がストレートに歌詞に、
歌い方に表現されている。
私も当時
「もういいかな～ Bon Joviは。。。」
なんて言って斜めに構えていた１人だったが、
この曲のシングルカット、
ビデオクリップで再び心を鷲掴みにされ、
翌日、アルバムを購入していた。
U２や彼らのように
自分たちの必殺技を持つバンドというのは
本当に強い。
