この曲は、
もともとカナダのシンガーソングライター、
レナード・コーエンが
1984年にリリースしたものが原曲で、
その後、
ジェフ・バックリィ、
シェリル・クロウ、
K.Ｄラング、
ジョン・ボン・ジョヴィ、
果てはボブディランまで
数多くのアーチストにカバーされている。
特に、
ジェフ・バックリィは、
1997年に30歳の若さで事故死したこともあり、
映画やドラマで使用され
一番有名かもしれない。
ここでは、
ドリーム・ワークスの映画「シュレック」の後半、
主人公が苦悩する場面のバックにながれる。
鼻にかかったような歌い方と、
ピアノの弾き語りのみというシンプルな構成が、
原曲の良さを引き出し心に響く。

歌詞を理解するためには、
旧約聖書に関する基礎的な知識がないと
難しいので、日本人には厳しいが、
歌詞の内容が分からずともいい曲はいい。
