Andy Shane and his Granny Webb always celebrate unbirthdays. This year he wants to buy her a special present, a case for her binoculars. Unfortunately, Andy doesn't have any money. When he and his friend Delores Starbuckle see an old chair by the road with a "Free" sign, they decide to collect castoff items and have a barn sale. The sale seems a great success, until Andy discovers that Delores accidentally sold Granny Webb's binoculars. Delores and Andy collect clues about the buyer only to learn that she has sold them to someone else. That person has traded them to someone else and so on. Andy is finally able to buy back the binoculars and is even able to trade for the binoculars case. However, he and Granny Webb are both in for surprises when they exchange gifts at the unbirthday celebration. While adults may be reminded of O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi," young readers will enjoy reading how Andy solves his dilemma. Carter's black-and-white illustrations provide important information not found in the text.
