In the first part レッドウィング エンジニア of this article I spoke of at-risk kids. At-risk kids are typically considered children who may have one or more of these risk factors: a disability, retained in school, poor English speaking skills or non-English speaking, raised by one parent or someone other then a parent, low family income, or no employed parent. The most common risk factors for these kids is being retained in school and not living with both parents. About 18% of these children have more then one risk factor. The average income of single parent families is generally around the poverty level. According to the Office of Management and Budget, a family of four earning $20,000 a year or less is below the federal poverty level. According to the 2005 US Census, there are approximately 13 million children living in poverty today. This is 1.3 million more children then the 2000 Census.Poor children risk school failure more commonly then children growing up in a family that earns a decent living wage. Schools with a higher population of poor children often have low test scores, high drop rates, and attendance problems. Sadly, schools with a higher population of poor children receive less funds to run their schools. We also spend more money on our high schools then we do on our elementary schools.Another factor in contributing to a child's academic success is the parents academic success. Parents with a higher education tend to value education more and push their children to get a good education. Parents who dropped out, barely made it through high school, or had a difficult time in school; do not always place an important value on education. According to Brookings Institution article レッドウィング 激安 Ending Poverty in America, "...despite waves of educational reform, the reading and math achievement of students from poor and low-income families has been virtually flat for three decades." Our nation still has more adults who are high school dropouts than who are college graduates. The better educated parents is more comfortable talking with the teacher and often knows more about what is important to be successful in school. Less educated parents tend to avoid school contact. They may feel intimidated by the teacher or other school personnel. They are unsure of what their rights are, or their child's rights. Instead of researching information, they rely on what others tell them. How can we change this? One way is to rethink the process of schooling children. Each school must create its own vision of what they want their school to become and then work towards that goal. They should create a learning environment with high expectations for all of its students. They should create a curriculum in which all students actively participate and use their higher level thinking skills. They need to find a way to get more parent involvement within the school day. There is no one answer on how to change the system of educating young minds. It depends on many factors. The biggest factor is the school environment. Parents, teachers, and business people need to be more involved in what is happening in our schools. Our children are our biggest resource, let's all pitch in and make sure that they are successful.By: Wendy GreifArticle Directory: Greif is a mother and graduate of USF in Special Education.
