Two years ago, I experienced the biggest scare in my life when the Great Tohoku earthquake shook Japan. 2年前の東日本大震災の時、私は人生で最も怖い体験をしました。
Fast forward to 2013, a disaster occurred shaking each Filipino to his core. Yolanda (international name is Haiyan) crossed our islands last Nov. 8 and changed the face of our Visayas region. But instead of focusing on the negative side, I'd like to share the positive things in this awfully grim event (just like I did two years ago). 2013年まで話を進めると、フィリピン人を心底震えさせる災害が起こりました。ヨランダ（国際的にはハイエン）と名付けられた台風が11月8日にビサヤ地方を横断し、様相を一変させてしまいました。しかし、悪い面ばかり取り上げるのではなく、（実際に2年前に私が行ったように）この恐ろしい出来事の良い面を伝えたいと思います。
When the year's strongest typhoon hit the land, the people prayed fervently and some even evacuated to churches - clear indication that our faith is stronger than any calamity... Amazing! 1年で最も強い台風がその地方を襲ったとき、人々は熱心に祈り、教会に避難する人達もいました。私たちの信仰はどんな災厄にも打ち勝つという明確な指標の下に。驚きました！
When media crew went to the affected areas, some people who lost their homes tried to salvage things that Yolanda left. There were images of people showing some of them carrying rosaries, crucifix or Sto. Niño. - clear indication of what is important to them... their belief. Amazing! マスコミの一団が被害を受けた地域を訪れた時、家を失くした人々がヨランダの残した所持品を探し出そうとしていました。ロザリオや十字架、聖ニノ像を持った人々の写真が映し出されました。彼らにとって何が大切かの明確な目安となります‐それは、信仰です。びっくりですね！
Some foreign volunteers in the area were surprised to see that despite the tragedy happening around them, people still knew how to smile and still emanated warmth. Amazing! 外国からのボランティアは、この悲劇にも関わらず、人々の笑顔や発せられる暖かさに驚きました。すごいです！
Stranded foreign visitors in Coron, Palawan pitched in to pack relief goods while they waited for the airport to be up and running again ... some foreigners chose to donate the money they intended to use for their planned Boracay vacay. Amazing! パラワン州コロン島に取り残された外国の観光客は、空港が再び利用可能になるまで救援物資の梱包に協力しました。休暇で使う予定だったお金を寄付した外国人もいたそうです。素晴らしい！
History repeats itself. In 1944, the Americans and the Japanese forces had an encounter at the Gulf of Leyte . This time, their paths cross again in the same place but for a different reason... To extend a hand to the Philippines. Amazing! 歴史は繰り返されます。1944年、アメリカと日本の軍隊はレイテ沖海戦でまみえました。今回も同じ場所で出会うことになりますが、理由は異なります。フィリピンに手を差し伸べるのです。驚くべきことです！
The aid coming from different countries were undeniably bigger than Haiyan. The prayers, encouraging messages and the ongoing global campaigns to raise funds for Yolanda victims ... simply overwhelming. Amazing! 様々な国々からの援助は紛れもなくハイエンよりも大きいです。ヨランダの被災者の為に祈る人々や、被災地へのメッセージに今も継続中の募金を募る人…本当に計り知れないほどです、素敵なことです！
A Japanese boy breaking his piggy bank... A little beggar boy who went to a donation center every time someone handed him PHP 1.00... A little girl who was selling candies in front of the church also did her share of giving... Two American girls selling lemonade for the victims of Haiyan... And the list goes on... Despite not having a lot to share, people are giving selflessly. Amazing! 日本人の男の子が、豚の貯金箱を壊しました。小さな乞食の男の子が募金センターに行く度、誰かが1ペソ手渡します。教会の前で飴を売る小さな女の子も彼女にできることをします。2人のアメリカ人の女の子はハイエンの被災者のためにレモネードを売ります。数え上げればきりがありません。 あまり分け与えられるものを持っていなくとも、人々は無私無欲で寄付をします。素晴らしいことです！
I believe that the Visayas region is strong and united. With the support from everyone, we will be able to stand up and regain ground again. 私はビサヤ地方は強く、団結していると信じています。皆さんからの援助を受け、私たちは再び立ち上がり、復興することができるでしょう。
