Pick up the pace in a bicycle raceCyclists who consider organized bike rides pass can break away in one of these regional competitive races:
Double Down Hoe Down downhill mountain bike race, 23 24: Part of the all gravity series, at Beacon Hill Camp Sekani in Spokane. Other events: June 14 16 at Silver Mountain, Aug. 16 18 at Whitefish, Sept. 28 29 at Kellogg, Oct. 10, five races, including Whitworth criterium and Mount Spokane time trial. Jedermann Gran Fondo, July 20: Timed recreational ride, 112 miles, based out of Cheney.50 Miles at the Pass, July 21: Mountain biking Gran Fondo at 4th of July Pass; includes routes of 10, 17, 35 and 50 miles. 27: Billed as the country toughest, route follows continental divide. Similar northeastern Oregon tour Aug. 3 10. 3 10: Fully supported tour that changes routes each year, 440 miles. 4 10: annual seven day, fully supported, 425 mile tour that changes each year. Organized by a non profit group of cyclists. Limit: 350 riders. $735. Park 2 Park Montana, Sept. 9 13: Fully supported 418 mile tour from Glacier to Yellowstone parks. 7 14: First class fully catered ride, 400 500 miles, in a different portion of Oregon each year. Limited to 2,200 riders.

Daffodil Classic, 14: Ride 40, 60 or 100 mile loops in the Orting Valley southeast of Tacoma; treats finishers with strawberry shortcake, sponsored by Tacoma Wheelmen's Bicycle Club. $30.
