Spark plug is a key component in running system. It works with coils or leads to set up ignition in engine cylinders. Normally spark plugs last for two years to be replaced. Fortunately in most models of car, changing spark plugs is not that hard. So what shall we do if we would like to do the job by self?

The first question is when? When the engine performs slowly to start, it indicates that spark plugs need to be changed. And then follow the vehicle manufacture information to find right spark plugs. You may also be able to get alternative spark plugs when the original one is not available. There are some key points to make sure they are interchangeable, including space, material, and temperature. When doing the job, you should always protect yourself from risk of electric shock. Make sure you always wear rubber gloves and keep in mind that spark plugs are working while engine is running.

The next step is to take out each plug from the engine, while it is not running. Use a spark plug socket and a ratchet moving in an anti-clockwise direction to remove the spark plug. After the plug is removed, start the motor and listen carefully to find if it affects the engine’s working. If there is no changed to be heard, it shows the plug was not working when it was in. Then it needs to be replaced. This is why we remove the spark plugs one by one to test them.

The last step is to test spark plug leads. It can be ignition leads or coils. To do this, we have to keep the engine off and wait until it is cooled. Then test the leads one by one by removing them from the spark plugs, and by placing the lead to any metal surface. If you hear a ticking noise this would tell you the wire is working. But this step is not recommended unless performed by or under supervision of a trained mechanic, because vehicles come up between 20,000 to 30,000 volts and even higher in some cars and this is very dangerous.
