Ries has released a couple full-length albums — 2005's "For You
Only" and 2007's "Without a Bird" — and two EPs, 2008's "Country EP"
with folk singer Ana?s Mitchell and the 2012 "Laurel Lake EP. "Ries

and that she has really found her voice with "Ghost of a Gardener.""It
is years of playing and whittling away and figuring out what is my sound
underneath all of that," she says. "When I was starting to write music
and record, I attempted to write certain genres that I was smitten by.

It was a way to learn how to write: ‘How are all of these other songs

Ries' previous
efforts were recorded on analog equipment, but "Ghost of a Gardener" was
made using both analog and digital technology. She says that method was
out of necessity because she wanted to include elements of horns,
strings and choirs and it was the only way to incorporate all of
that."The string section was in California, the horns were in New York
and the harmony choir was in Austin," she says. "When you are dealing
with that many layers and that many different engineers and everyone
else's time frames, it is tough to record it in analog. If I was in one
studio doing everything with one engineer and all of the musicians

results are a lovely blend of old-time jazz, folk and blues sounds with a
modern sensibility.Ries took time away from recording and touring from
2008 to 2010, but she didn't look at it as a break. She thought she was
done with music.
