I be seemingly in a routine of blogging about jewelry, family, and antiquing….have you observed? AThese are my favorite topics, and I really hope you appreciate them too. ALet’s go directly to the family/antiquing part. A AA several months ago as the older boys were in ski school, I took a journey to Hagerstown, MD to check out several classic centers. AIf you’re actually in the area, Antiques Crossroads and Beaver Creek Antiques Market are alongside and I’d positively put them in the “very good” type! AI used a few hours there with my 3-year-old daughter and we had a great time.
This past week-end, the DC Big Flea was around again. AI went a year ago and shared about friendship and great finds in this classic Emporio Armani watches post. AThis year I brought my 9-year-old daughter and the aisles were strolled by us for 4 1/2 hours! Thankfully he’s a treasure-hunter just like me! AHe was looking for fountain pens and watches, and I was looking for….well, a variety of good things.
We met a great seller who had been desperate to share with us the development of Athe wristwatch. A She explained that during the time of WWI, Apocket watches were cumbersome for soldiers to carry, and how connectors were designed so that they might easily see their view on their writst. AMy child received some good guidance too; she told him to begin a collection now and just retain it! AAnother merchant told us that one of her sons taken care of his first year of school with the money he made from selling a collection of gadgets that he started Best Mens Rado Watch when he was young. AAnother pair wanted to show my boy their wonderful huge (thickest one I ever saw!) dictionary and helped him lookup several words. AThey were concerned with kids nowadays just looking on the net for data. Coincidentally, he just had a task earlier this week that required an actual dictionary to be used by him (had to borrow one from PopPop!). In the large dictionary, the last President listed in the back was Harry S. Truman!
Now onto a few of the pieces we found -
AOversized hanging deposits. AThese may make good Xmas ornaments.
All sorts of mementos. AThe box is from a prominent jewelry shop in Baltimore which was running a business from 1873 to 1991. AI was delighted to get the small soccer appeal, it says Navy!
Lots of glistening baubles. AOne of my personal favorite finds are the velvet boxes within the jewelry. Well-worn velvet is swoon-worthy if you ask me! AOne of the boxes nonetheless had a – the boxes once kept what must have been extremely high-end stockings. AThe company title was “The Jewel by Sapphire”.
ADetail of the beautiful top applique. AOne of the best books became true when I came across these boxes!
A grouping of earbobs. AThe nice enameled red Weiss earrings are another favorite find. AThis photograph was taken on the inside of the box cover – notice the top emblem label.
I came across many unique case cards. AI like to search for siblings (especially brothers), boys in sailor suits, exclusive props and beautiful apparel. AWho were both of these girls? AAnd don’t you adore the lavish hat and parasol transported by your ex on the right?
