（２）living room
この頃は新聞に挟みこまれている多様な広告の中の不動産関係のものに、建て売り住宅のものが目につく。そういう広告の中には、住宅の間取りが示されていて、その中心に「リビング」と書かれているものがある。これは日本人の好きな省略形であって、英語でなら living room と示すところである。
living roomに関して、私には面白い体験がある。それをここで紹介してみたい。
私が初めて英国を訪れたのは、確か昭和48年（1973年）の８月のことであり、ロンドン南部郊外のCroydonというところであった。そこの the Carrington family 宅にホームステイしたのである。
UNESCOから旅費、宿泊費、研究費が支給されていた関係で、まずパリに行き、その後イタリアを覗いて（ローマ、フィレンツェ、ピサ、ミラノ）、イタリアから英国ロンドン郊外の Gatwick Airportに着き、迎えてくれたキャリングトン夫人の自動車でお宅にチェックインしたわけで、夕方になっていたので、早速 welcome dinner であった。 今でも憶えているのは、生まれて初めて鹿のスープ、鹿肉のステーキを頂いたことであった。食後のアイスクリームを食べた後、コーヒーが入って、ホステス役の Mrs. Carrington が切り出したのである。
C: Now, our dinner is over. Let's move into our front room and get relaxed. We can atch TV there..
O: That's a good idea. Let's move.

O: It's a nice room. You said, “front room.” I have been to the United States and stayed with local American families a couple of times. You call this the front room. I find your front room is the same as the living room in the United States. So I've got a usage question.
You call this room a front room. Is there any other name?
C: Yes. We also call it a parlour.
O: Don't you call it a living room?
C: Oh, that is the word used among the working class people.
O: What about a sitting room?
C: The upper class or upper middle class people use the word “a sitting room.”
このようなわけで、滞在第一日の夜から、早くも私は英国の伝統文化の一つである階層社会とその関連の言語表現というか語彙の用法について体験できたのであった。
と同時に、米国人たちは英国の労働社階層の語であるliving room を日常使っていることが分かり、 新大陸である北米大陸に、階層社会で窒息しそうな英国の底辺階層から脱出するために、新大陸に移住した英国人のことが思い出されたのである。
