今回は、対比的な事物を並べて言う時に、日本語と英語で異なるものを紹介します。
a. 私の父と母 → my mother and father
もしくは、my mom and dad です。mama, papaは幼児が使うことが多いです。
b. 昼も夜も → night and day
アメリカの作曲家コール・ポーターの、代表曲の１つにもなっています。
但し、day and nightと言う場合もあります。
c. 老いも若きも → young and old
d. 東西南北 → north, south, east and west
俗説で、newsは、この方角の頭文字と言われたことがありましたが、
それは間違いです。newsは、neｗ（新しいこと）に複数形のsが付きました。
e. 西北（北西） → northwest
f. 北北西 → north-northwest
g, 南東（東南） → southeast
h. あちこち → here and there
i. 売買 → buy and sell
ちなみに、「人身売買」は、human traffickingと言います。
「古本売買」の看板は、"Books bought and sell" や、"Used books""Secondhand books"などと書かれています。
