気象庁は平成２４年、気象予報で用いるスーパーコンピューターを従来の約３０倍の計 算能力を持つ世界最高水準の新型機に更新する。主に航空管制に用いる空港での予報精度 を向上させ、より円滑な運航が可能になるという。国際拠点機能を強化する成田空港や羽 田空港では発着回数が増加しており、気象庁は「混雑する首都圏上空で、気象変化による 遅れを最小限に食い止められる」としている 航空機の離着陸は、滑走路に横風が吹くと妨げられるため、天気や気温以外にも風向き や風速、視程（見通せる距離）などが重要になる。また、強風や雷雨などの悪天で航空機 の着陸が不可能になった場合、空中での待機が増え、到着時間の大幅な遅れも懸念され る
■毎秒８２９兆回 気象庁は予報範囲となる空港周辺の半径９キロ以内で、具体的で細かな予報結果を各空 港の管制官や航空会社に提供している。１８年に導入されたコンピューターは１秒間に２ ７兆６千億回の計算にとどまっていたが、新たに導入する新型では毎秒８２９兆４０００ 億回まで向上。１時間ごとだった空港周辺の予報間隔も１０分ごとに短縮、風向きや風速 の変化を事前に察知できるようになる
■精密モデル開発 現在の予報では、大気を水平方向で５キロ間隔、垂直方向は高度約２２キロまでを５０ 層に格子状に分割。温度や風速、気圧を計算する「メソモデル」という数値予報モデルを 用いている 今回の更新で気象庁はさらに精密な予報モデル「局地モデル」を開発。水平方向で２キ ロ間隔、垂直方向で約２０キロを６０層まで格子を細分化し、尾根や谷などの地形や海か らの風も予測計算の材料に組み込んだ 昨年９月の台風９号を用いた局地モデルの検証実験では、降水域と３時間降水量が気象 レーダーやアメダスによる実際の計測とほぼ一致した。局地モデルは当面、東日本から北 日本での予報に使用し、開始１年後に日本全体を対象にするという
