I visited our local bookstore this morning (talk about a business that's almost as bad as the studio business) and saw The Rest Is Noise and had to pick it up. Much of his new book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, is spent wrestling with the idea of the push and pull of the crowd and the “split between modernist and populist conceptions of the composer's role. Alex Ross began writing for The New Yorker in 1993 and became the magazine's music critic in 1996. Ross did not discover pop music until he was 20.
