Even for those who know little about dance, Merce Cunningham is a recognizable name - an iconic figure in his field. His mid-20th century collaborations with composer John Cage (his lifelong partner) and visual artist Robert Rauschenberg were central to an era of transformation. Cunningham resisted "avant-garde" or any other label. "I don't describe it. I do it," he once said. Now, with Cunningham, we have a chance to experience what he did. Filmmaker Alla Kovgan assembles the last generation of Cunningham dancers (led by Merce Cunningham Dance Company assistant director of choreography Jennifer Goggans) to present landmark works from the Cunningham repertoire. The film concentrates on the three decades from 1942 to 1972 when Cunningham was making his reputation. Gorgeously shot in 3D, Cunningham brings us closer to these works than any audience has ever been before. Taking an inventive approach with locations, the film places dancers in evocative backdrops such as a tunnel, a high-rise rooftop, and a forest. These current-day performances are interlaced with archival footage of Cunningham speaking and moving. We also hear illuminating interviews with Cage, Rauschenberg, and members of the original Merce Cunningham Dance Company, who endured years of rejection and outrage before they slowly won over audiences. "I never believed that idea that dancing was the greatest of the arts," said Cunningham. "But when it clicks, there's the rub. It becomes memorable. And one can be seduced all over again." Скажу сразу — лично мне очень понравился фильм, но если вы не любите необычное искусство, то наверное этот фильм не для вас.
И конечно надо смотреть самим, чтобы получить этот не забываемый опыт.
А разные мысли кружат в голове:
«Что это? Живые скульптуры? Управляемый хаос?.. как вообще двигаться по сцене и не налетать друг на друга.. А у танцоров то хорошая подготовка»
Немного напрягают субтитры, неудобно читать и смотреть танец одновременно, лучше бы озвучили.
Отношение к творчеству Каннингема может быть разным, но можно сказать что он определенно умел танцевать. Что я имею ввиду, говоря о человеке, который создал около 200 танцев и провёл около 700 танцевальных перформансов, от того, что сейчас бы могли назвать флешмобом, до выступления на сценах Лондона и Парижа. Речь конечно о моем собственном восприятии увиденного и попытке понять, то что вообщем-то и не требуется понимать. Основываясь на собственном опыте, я бы сопоставил Каннингема с Пикассо. Если вы отдаленно знакомы с творчеством этого знаменитого художника, то возможно вам вспомнятся довольно странные абстрактные картины, но при этом у него есть и вполне понятные работы, из которых можно сделать вывод, что он умел рисовать. А может его лучше сопоставить с Ван Гогом, которого с его 800 картинами иногда называют родоначальником «современного искусства».

- В этом танце я хочу чтобы у меня на спине был стул.
- Если у тебя будет стул, то я хочу чтобы у меня была дверь.
- Ты хочешь дверь — не проблема…»
Этот танец нам показан как в архивной съемке так и в современной интерпретации режиссера Аллы Ковган.
И вот мы подошли к самому главному. Мы имеем возможность смотреть не совсем танец, который увидели бы, побывав на реальной постановке Каннингема. Нам показывают фильм в котором соединено несколько видов искусства — танец, музыка (такая же необычная), декорации — пока все то что было и раньше; но режиссёр отошёл от нелюбви Автора к костюмам, и танцоры в кино уже в них облачены; и все снято на серьезное оборудование в формате 3D, и мы видим уже не плоские декорации, а сцены, которые наиболее эффектны именно в 3D — перспектива, городской пейзаж днём и ночью, с высоты птичьего полета, лучи света. О да свет! Режиссёр играет им почти в каждой постановке разных танцев. Да да, та самая игра света и тени.
Может я что забыл упомянуть. Но главное, не нужно ничего объяснять — это надо видеть!
Ребята, все кто любит танцы, необычную музыку, костюмы, перформансы, современное кино. Смотреть смотреть смотреть.
Всем кто любит людей — фильм про необычных людей и их творческий поиск, проживших сложную жизнь, но не потерявших и чувство юмора.

Какая же отличная идея выбрать для своего режиссёрского дебюта такую тему, в которой можно экспериментировать со съемкой не пытаясь втиснуть это в надуманный сюжет.
В сети можно найти цикл видео под названием «9 языков танца», и Мерс Каннингем один из них. Быть может Алле Ковган удастся снять фильмы и о других тоже.
Надеюсь этот работа не останется без наград (в отличие от, как мне кажется обделённого призами, Мега шедевра «Работа без авторства»).

A remarkable achievement by filmmaker Alla Kovgan, spending seven years to make this classic tribute to the late dancer/choreographer Merce Cunningham.
Working with both archive footage and valuable sound recordings, she conjures up the avant-garde artist through recordings of his work, his philosophy of his art and comments by many close collaborators including notably John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg. Not meant as a biopic, film concentrates on spectacularlhy cinematic (in 3-D) new performances of many of his dances, executed by members of his company, which disbanded in 2011, after Merce's death in 2009.
At a q&a following the screening, Kovgan indicated that Wim Wenders' innovative 2011 3-D dance film about German choreographer Pina Bausch inspired her to take on this formidable project, finally starting shooting in Stuttgart in 2015 with principal photography taking place in 2018.
Her use of 3-D technique is outstanding, resulting in gripping visual images, enhanced by the accompaniment of the original dance scores by John Cage and others. For a novice like me, not overly familiar with Merce's achievements, the movie brings his dance to life and points to how 3-D technology can be used artfully rather than as a gimmick, or its current excuse to permit higher price points for movie admissions to films, both animated and action-oriented, that should play just as well if not better in 2-D on large screens.
