The free radical theory of aging proposes that mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) determines the rate of aging. Supporting this hypothesis, longer-lived species produce fewer ROS than shorter-lived ones, anti blue ray glasses and calorically restricted rodents live longer and produce fewer ROS than controls. We studied such correlation in Drosophila melanogaster in caloric restriction and in mutant flies overexpressing the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT).

At weaning, MEW and PEW pups presented lower body weight (-18% and -15%), total body fat (-26% and -27%), total bone mineral density (-7% and -6%), total bone mineral content (-30% and -32%), bone area (-28% and -30%), serum osteocalcin (-20% and -55%), and higher C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I) (1.3 and 1.1-fold increase). However, serum ionized calcium was lower only in MEW pups (-34%), 25-hydroxyvitamin D was higher (1.4-fold increase), and PTH was lower (-26%) only in PEW group. The present study shows that both early weaning models leads to an impairment of osteogenesis associated with lower adipogenesis by different mechanisms, involving mainly changes in vitamin D and PTH.© Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart New York.
The aim of the study was to examine the factor structure of alexithymia in patients with eating disorders and to compare scores on these factors with a non-eating disordered population. The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) was given to patients with restricting anorexia nervosa (AN/R, n = 29), anti blue ray lenses bulimia nervosa (BN, n = 83), anorexia with a subtype bulimia (AN/BN, n = 15), and 79 female students. Factors were extracted using a principal-components factor analysis.OBJECTIVE: The association between deficits in executive functioning and functional outcomes was examined among adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).METHOD: Subjects were adults who did (N=213) and did not (N=145) meet DSM-IV criteria for ADHD. The authors defined having deficits in executive functioning as having at least two measures of executive functioning with scores 1.5 standard deviations below those of matched comparison subjects.RESULTS: Significantly more adults with ADHD had deficits of executive functioning than comparison subjects. Deficits of executive functioning were associated with lower academic achievement, irrespective of ADHD status.
