「看看臘月盡」とは禅の教えを伝える禅語のひとつで、掛け軸などによく書かれています。中国語では「看看」と「看」を二つ重ねて「ちょっと看る」の意味で、「臘」とは「多く集まる」とか「つなぎ合わせる」という意味です。古代中国では、新年と旧年をつなぐ12月に先祖と神を一緒にお祀りする臘祭が行われていたことから、「臘月」とは12月を指します。「盡」は「尽」の正字体で、聿（刷毛）＋灬（水滴の形）＋皿（器）から構成され、刷毛のようなものを手に持ち、皿の中を掃き出し、皿の中のものがすべてなくなるから「尽きる」になります。従って、「ちょっと見る間に、12月も終わってしまう」ということから、毎日を無駄に過ごさぬように大切にしなければなりません。
Kan Kan Roh-getsu Tsuku "看看臘月盡" is one of the teachings of Zen and it is often written in hanging scrolls. Kan "看" means "to see" and two "看" express "to give it glance". Roh "臘" means "to gather" or "to connect". From the ancient China, Roh-getsu "臘月" is a word for December and this came from the Roh festival that worships the Gods and the ancestors. Tsuku "尽" which means "run out" used to be written "盡" (it is not used today). The part "聿" means brush, "灬" means drops of water and "皿" means plates. They imagined a man holding a brush and sweeping all the things on the plate, so it "runs out". Therefore, this saying "看看臘月盡" expresses how time flies at the end of the year by meaning December ends while we give it a glance, so we should treasure our everyday life without a waste.
