Her mission is to create beautiful interiors that reflect her client’s personality and style. When designing kitchens, I firmly believe that drawers are way more practical than cupboard doors. It is so annoying trying to dig through the back of the cupboard just to find that tupperware lid! There are many brands that offer pull out storage solutions such as Blum, Hafele and Hettich. The width of the cabinet needed for the pull out bin is generally 600mm.
Some are specially dedicated rooms, others just big enough to stand in. Walk-through wardrobes are a smart option in smaller spaces, often built into the hallway between a master bedroom and the en suite bathroom. What really makes some built-in wardrobes stand out from the crowd are extra, often unseen, features that make them a dream to use.
You can choose standard covered doors, or keep the whole lot open, so you can see your clothing and accessories at a glance. "Sometimes the builders try and do it all, but the design isn't always as good," says Diana Bal, a wardrobe designer with Soho Design. To save more space, you can build deep shoe racks and put the shoes you do not regularly wear deeper in the back. Use the PAX planning tool to design, experiment and create your perfect storage solution. When you've completed your design, you can add it to your cart and order it online. Generally, one quarter of hanging space should be allocated for full length clothing, with the remainder for shorter pieces.
Shelving is commonly 45 centimetres deep and often includes pegs to allow you to adjust the height of the shelf to personal preferred heights. Well designed shelves and draws can really increase your storage capacity keeping your clothes well organised and free from dust. The standard depth of a wardrobe is 530mm , anything smaller will effect hanging space.
By using flat pack cabinets and accessories and doing it yourself, you can have the look of a $5000 built-in for about $2000. These cabinets are readily available – all you need do is put them together. If depth is a concern, note that a wardrobe needs to be at least 580mm deep for clothes to hang properly.
But these can be handy for things you use rarely, such as suitcases. Through the designing phase of your wardrobes, you think about your current storage needs. With time the number and nature of your items change; you give away some clothes and buy new ones.
Some alcoves are just too shallow for a wardrobe and would be better suited to ornamental shelving. The other big design decision is whether to take your built-ins right to the ceiling or finish them at a certain height, leaving a gap under the ceiling. In most cases, it's better to build wardrobes right to the ceiling, as this gives a cleaner, sleeker look. The exception to the rule is older-style houses with higher than average ceilings.

The higher shelves can havepigeon holes for travelling items or guest linen. A good idea is to use attractive dust-proof boxes or bins, and label them in matching groups, so you know which ones contain which items. However, for shoe shelves, allow a height of 220 to 260 mm for heels and flats, the same amount for most men’s shoes. To have each pair of shoes or boots with its own pigeonhole, you’ll need 220 to 300 mm wide and 350 mm depth for women’s shoes and a bit more for men.
