What are 4680 Batteries?

The name "4680" refers to the battery's dimensions: 46 millimeters in diameter and 80 millimeters tall. This larger size, compared to the widely used 2170-type cells (21mm diameter, 70mm tall), offers several potential benefits:

Increased Energy Density: 4680 batteries can store more energy per unit volume or weight. This translates to potentially longer driving ranges for EVs equipped with these cells.
Faster Charging: The larger format allows for more surface area for contact between the electrode and electrolyte, potentially enabling faster charging times.

Key Players in the 4680 Battery Race

Several companies are actively developing and producing 4680 batteries, including:

Tesla: A leading proponent of 4680 technology, Tesla is integrating these cells into its next-generation vehicles like the Cybertruck and Semi.
Panasonic: A long-time partner with Tesla, Panasonic is reportedly involved in the production of 4680 batteries for Tesla vehicles.

Beyond Tesla: 4680 LFP Batteries and Alternative Sizes

While the initial focus for 4680 cells has been on Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) chemistry for high-performance applications, there's growing interest in Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) variants.  4680 LFP batteries could offer advantages like extended lifespan and improved safety, making them suitable for a wider range of EVs.

 



It's important to note that the "4680" format isn't the only large cylindrical cell under development. There's also the 4695 (or 46950 battery ) battery with a slightly larger diameter (46.95mm) but similar height. These cells offer potential benefits similar to the 4680 format and are being explored by some manufacturers.
