Electronics recycling is complex. Since electronics are made up of a variety of materials, including plastics and metals, they are more complex to recycle then simple products like paper or glass. That does not mean they are not worth the effort of recycling, though. Certified electronics recycling is important and can be quite beneficial.
What Can be Recycled
Almost everything electronic can be recycled in one way or another. It is rare that an electronic product can not be recycled in some way. In fact, almost 99 percent of an electronic product can be recycled. That means only a small amount is actually waste going to a landfill.
Electronics contain a variety of materials. The valuable metals, like copper and gold, found in many electronic products is very useful in the creation of new products. This is a major reason to help recycle electronics. Metals are costly to produce and some are becoming rare to even find, so recycling helps to ensure that less energy is waste din produced new metals and that the reserves are not depleting as fast.
Hazards of Electronic Waste
There are elements of electronic waste that makes it dangerous and harmful to dispose of in the trash where it will then end up in a landfill. Such things as mercury and lead used in electronic products is very harmful to humans and the environment. When an electronic product ends up in a landfill there is a risk that these materials will end up in the environment.
Through recycling electronics, though, the risk is eliminated. The recycling process properly disposes of the hazardous materials.
Methods of Recycling
There are two main methods of recycling electronic products:
Recycling Center - You can take your electronic products to a recycling center that is open for electronic products. They will properly recycle ad dispose of the electronic equipment. This is a good option when the equipment is broken and no longer useable.
Reuse - Reusing electronic products can be done when the product is still in good working order or only needs minor repair. You can donate it to charity, sell it or give it to someone in need.
No matter how you certified electronics recycling, the bottom line is that you should recycle. It is better for the environment and for you. Throwing out old electronics is harmful and irresponsible. Recycling is not too difficult and something that anyone can do.
