There are a lot of choices to buy furniture as an expat in Singapore. You can also buy custom-made rattan or ready-made oriental furniture in addition to the standard modern furniture.there has been an increase in the number of Chinese expatriates living and working in India.

If you decide to buy Oriental furniture, be aware that their size and design may not be suitable once you are repatriated. A nice antique Chinese bed is not only difficult to transport but may look awkward in your living room at home in London, as nothing else will fit in! This furniture can shrink, expand, and crack in different climates. Fumigating your furniture is a must before you ship it back!

Antiques and reproductions

Before you begin, decide whether you are going to decorate your home or keep some of the memories. Or if you will be collecting specific items to make an investment in the future. The term antique is used for a variety of items offered and you need to inform yourself first about the host and home countries' regulations and custom requirements such as import and export restrictions on religious artifacts (e.g. Buddha statues).

Before you buy, educate yourself.

- Take photos of all items and keep detailed receipts.

- Buy quality, not quantity.

- Visualize each item in your country and be realistic about its size, durability, and appearance.

- Protect expensive purchases

Oriental Furniture

There are many types of furniture, depending on where they were made and the material or style used. Many furniture made in India and Indonesia are often made in small villages. They have a local touch, rather than being in pristine condition. This is very exotic. Chinese furniture can be made from rosewood, camphor or lacquer, coromandel teak, Elm, and other woods. They may also come in modern, reproduction, and antique versions. Custom-made furniture should be seasoned or kiln-dried to avoid shrinking in a dry environment. Tongue-and-groove-floating panels are recommended to allow wood to expand.

Teak Furniture

The Latin name for Teak is Tectona grandis, which is offered all over Southeast Asia. Teak is an extremely dense, coarse-grained hardwood, which is well known for its durability and resistance to water, the woodworm and many chemical agents. There are many teakwood plantations that cater to the furniture industry.

Teak furniture should be purchased

- Buy 100% solid teak. (Not Shorea wood or a expats living in qingdao combination of both woods.)

- Teak should be made from kiln dried and not green lumber.

Teak should only be grown in a plantation. Ask for certification.

- Thick pieces of wood used make the product solid and durable.

Oil finishes can darken products.

- Plain furniture lightens into a silver gray when left outdoors.
