翼 Good afternoon 翼

Long time since my last update. I would like to talk about my last class this week at university.

To our last class, Technologic Arts Applied to Education, we were supposed to read Deleuze e o Tempo-memória no cinema moderno, our professors’ book, so that we could discuss about cinema & photography. Firstly, we’ve talked about artistic photography and how black&white ones bring dramaticity, which doesn’t thin out as colorful photograph might do. We’ve seen some famous works from a couple of artists while realizing, through our professors’ orientation, light set between light&dark shades, as well as how it can represent, also, light&heavy in some works, a kind of contrast in the scenery. So that we could note this, artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa & Vivian Maier were introduced to us.

We've learned too that decentralization of our object in photograph is similar to using figure of speech in a text; so this means it could be seen as the poetic of a photograph. Also, this dislocated aesthetics might represent a break on the conventional rules. When it comes about conventional rules, we’ve seen that the dichotomic concept of right&wrong, good&bad, yes&no, true&false, being&non-being comes from the Greek Plato’s perspective strongly rooted on Renaissance period, since at that time there would be no mid-term between them. So, now, having this in mind, it’s possible that we have not only black&white, but also shades of gray. And that’s what these artists put on their works. Differently from Renaissance, and not unprivilegizing that period’s perspectives of art, we now have that it’s okay, when it comes about artistic photograph, to adopt stadium (posed, non-natural) or punctum (in movement, spontaneous) concepts, not just one or another, exclusively. As to relate to this, we’ve seen that on Renaissance period geometricity between both sides of a painting, the proportion & the proximity with reality was a must. By these artists, it was introduced to us show that conceptually some rules can be broken on contemporary period.  Vivian Maier has taken selfies on shop windows; Henri Cartier-Bresson & Robert Capa also play with punctum concepts, haha. ( ´艸`) I got amazed!

Lastly, we’ve seen a bit about Deleuze’s movement-image & time-image on cinema; while the first one could be manipulated by edition & cut of scenes, according to what is supposed or not to be displayed, focusing on action & reaction, mainly; the other one has movement as a secondary aspect, being subordinated by time. It could be said it’s closer to reality due to the fact we got to see, without cuttings, the sequence of happenings of a character. According to our professor, this seems to be introduced to cinema in the middle of 20th century, although most blockbuster films are likely to adopt movement-image because of the factor action. And Kuleshov effect, which seems to be: bringing a meaning to the images displayed by conditioning them through edition. The same image combined to a different edition (context) can bring a different meaning & give us reading possibilities; that was incredible to realize & learn!

After having this class, I remembered I've seen something interesting about Studio Ghibli films; on the video I’ve watched, one talked about MA (間), a concept Hayao Miyazaki is said to embody in his works, this would be emptiness. In some scenes we would, in fact, see a river flowing, tress dancing by the wind or just the surroundings.

Learning new concepts & getting ready to try seeing photography through a different perspective now; that's rewarding & quite fun! (^_^)V

...

"We have a word for that in Japanese," he said. "It's called ma. Emptiness. It's there intentionally."

Is that like the "pillow words" that separate phrases in Japanese poetry?

"I don't think it's like the pillow word." He clapped his hands three or four times. "The time in between my clapping is ma. If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it's just busyness, But if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a wider dimension. If you just have constant tension at 80 degrees all the time you just get numb."

翼 Good morning. 翼

Long time since I've written in here. It's been about two months since I've started working as a tutor in distance learning courses at university. By the time I was under a selective process so that I could get this job, also was going through another selective process to get a scholarship to master degree. Well, came to know last week I passed the tests & I'm now a Master student of education field. Met my professor & classmates; from next week on our classes, from Monday to Wednesday, begin; on Thursdays we'll be having seminar classes along with other education field classes.

I'm just beginning this new step of my professional & academic life & am aware it's going to be rough to keep on with my foreign languages studies, which actually are my hobbie, also keep on with my daily exercise routine as I work now eight hours a day, from Monday to Friday, and five hours on Saturdays, while having to stay at university for at least more four hours to watch classes & do self-study whenever is needed. Mindset this year to academic issues & research; glad for been working with something related to my goals. Have to improve my English skills too, since here in Brazil, Master degree students are supposed to go through an international module before the 2-year course is over; I was informed I'll be going to Florida International University in Miami, The U.S.A.; it will take some time before planning the academic purpose trip, but not too early to get a visa.

Hope 2018 will be a busy, but thrilling & challenging year! Can't wait to have all my stuff scheduled, so that I can also plan my personal activities & spend a quality time, either for sleep or for any other kind of stuff. In case I go on a for fun travel this year (wish I can), it will have to be in the end of the year, since I have no vacation in the middle of the year anymore. But that's all right, adaptating makes part of living, and I couldn't say I'm not glad for everything I've gotten so far!

Today at work, breaktime.

Bullying & harassment - people just realize how serious it is when it comes this far. That is a sad, but true reality! Why do they only notice how negatively it can affect someone's life from the moment they go through some uncomfortable situation, as the one we've been living in lately, unfortunately? If we only put ourselves in someone's shoe after going through the same, perhaps empathy & thoughtfulness for one another are missing, aren't they?

"If there's peace, I'm done here"; once I said it expecting bullying was finally over & we could live peacefully; but no. And here we are! As we've been through this situation, fighting to prove who's the bad & the good guy, it has also come to my mind human's true nature.

That's why I'd like to share this article, which is about a social experiment, questioning our nature. I wonder how we'd be, as a society,  without any rules, conduct codes, moral & ethic or social manner; they were all invented by the men & after all, to protect them from themselves.

In the end, you can see written the following: "This work reveals something terrible about humanity. It shows how fast a person can hurt you under favorable circumstances. It shows how easy it is to dehumanize a person who does not fight, who does not defend himself. It shows that if he provides the stage, the majority of "normal" people, apparently can become truly violent".

From this statement, I'd say we're all dangerous, haha. If that's our nature, we have no choice, but to police ourselves, so that we can try to live in harmony.

Also, as to follow this theme, there's a movie called "Blindness" (2008), which presents something similar to the article above. I've watched when I was at high school. In moments like those we might be capable of tasting human's true essence.

Virtues & flaws, all of us have them (obviously), it may just depend on which one speaks louder when there's nobody watching us! (sorry, that's cliché, haha) Thankfully, when it comes about enlighment, education itself can provide, with more open-mindeness & less ignorance, more peace & less war. It's valuable to remember teaching doesn't guarantee learning; it's supposed to be a dual process, which happens when both sides are willing to work together, in order to achieve an effective knowledge construction.

P.S.: I felt like I was at university while writing this, hahaha.

Thank you for reading.
