World's most influential people (+list)
What do singer Adele, sprinter Usain
Bolt and British royalty celebrity Pippa Middleton have in common? They're among
the 100 most influential people in the world, according to Time
magazine.
Time has published its annual list, showcasing a typically
eclectic mix of personalities, ranging from the Marcus
Allen Jersey
rich and powerful, like financier Warren Buffett or US
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernake, to popular entertainers like Adele and
Beyonce.
The list, broken into moguls, breakouts, icons, pioneers and
leader categories, is compiled by Authentic NFL Jersey
Time after an online poll of readers.
This year Time chose 38 women for
the top 100, which was more than in previous years.
Although the list is
still heavily US-centric, featuring popular Asian-American basketball player
Jeremy Lin and politicians like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, it had 54
international names - the first time they outweighed the American
contingent.
Those range from Middleton, sister of Prince William's wife
Kate, to Samira Lawrence
Taylor Jersey
Ibrahim, an Egyptian activist.
The shadowy
group of activist computer hackers Anonymous also earned a place, despite the
list technically being for influential people.
Time managing editor Rick
Stengel said the list was "about the infinite possibilities of influence and the
power of influence to change the world.
"Now [one] can tweet a phrase
that reaches millions in a flash. Influence was never easier - or more
ephemeral. Which is why we try to choose those people whose influence is both
lasting and, with a few notable exceptions, laudable."
Super-chef opts for taste of home
If he was on death row and given the right to a last meal of anything he wanted, Masterchef judge Josh Emmett would have no trouble making his choice.
"I get asked that quite a bit but I think it has to be something New Zealand," he said.
"It has to be crayfish or lamb and it has to be pavlova."
The internationally-acclaimed chef who was raised on a Ngahinapouri farm west of Hamilton, was last night Greg Jennings Jersey presented with an honorary fellowship at Wintec.
The award recognised his feats in the culinary world after the four-star Michelin Chef left what was then known as Waikato Polytechnic more than 20 years ago and worked on the Waipa Delta and at a Hamilton East rest home washing dishes.
Yesterday he returned to his old school where he told an audience in a packed auditorium how within a few years he had gone from working at Auckland's Cin Cin restaurant to sitting in Donald Driver Jersey spa pools on superyachts parked off Corsica and working under the tutelage of fiery-tempered chef Gordon Ramsay in London.
"It was a real buzz ... what it gave me was an opportunity to put us out there," he said.
"There wasn't really much guidance, I learned so much off Gordon but it was like "here's a restaurant, do it" Jermichael Finley Jersey and we did some amazing things and met some amazing people."
As he casually whipped up a "fairly simple" serving of cured salmon with butternut squash and soy toasted pumpkin seeds, Emmett said as a student he never envisioned the success he has had.
"Not in a million years ... I never thought I'd make it out of Hamilton," he said.
"But I'm extremely stubborn."
He told the budding chefs that the industry was Charles Woodson Jersey a "really, really hard" one to make a mark in.
"And I think the reason I succeeded is not because I was always the most talented, not always because I am the most creative - it is because I'm the most hardworking."
"I will work longer, harder and do whatever it takes to make sure I am more successful and outlast and I did outlast a lot of people."
"It's about sacrifices, there are so many sacrifices day after day, missing all of the good times, working Christmases and New Years."
Emmett has Ray Nitschke Jersey overseen multi-million dollar openings of Ramsay's restaurants in London, New York, Los Angeles and Melbourne.
He has named his own restaurant - his first - "Rata".
It opens in Queenstown next month, features local produce and will be a more "sensible" project and low-key affair. "It's based around New Zealand, the name was chosen because we want to do something which is quintessentially New Zealand."
Home for Emmett has been London since May last year and there's also his place in New Jersey.
But he is keen on coming home to New Zealand so his two sons Finn, 3, and Louis, 18 months, could experience some of the lifestyle he had as a boy.
"I always wanted my kids to have the same sort of growing up and opportunities and lifestyle I had.
"I like New Zealand lifestyle and I think it's important they get a taste of it."

Rugby: Perenara out, Vito returns for Hurricanes
Livewire Hurricanes halfback TJ Perenara has been ruled out of Saturday Jamaal Charles Jersey night's Super Rugby showdown Brandon Flower Jersey with the Crusaders in Wellington due to an ankle sprain.
The 19-year-old tweaked his ankle during a training session on Monday and hasn't recovered in time and will be replaced by Hawkes Bay halfback Chris Eaton, while Wellington's Frae Wilson will wear the No 20 jumper on the bench as cover.
Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett said taking in to consideration the length of the season it was best to rest Perenara rather than put pressure on Brandon Marshall Jersey him to play when he wasn't at 100 per cent.
Perenara's combination with first-five Beauden Barrett has blossomed during the past five games, after Perenara was installed in the No 9 jersey for the week-three clash with the Western Force and he marked his starting debut for the franchise with a hat-trick of tries.
Wilson is yet to make his debut for the Hurricanes and was pulled in from the wider training group at the start of the season when Chris Smylie suffered a serious shoulder injury.
Wing Cory Jane Ronnie Brown Jersey left today's training session at the Hutt Recreation Ground in Lower Hutt with a moon boot on his right ankle but it was largely precautionary although more would be known about the ailment at the captain's run tomorrow.
Victor Vito has been named to start at No 8 after recovering from the calf injury that kept him out of the last two matches but promising loose forward Brad Shields is absent against Chad Henne Jersey because of his shoulder injury.

Super 15 Game of the week: Hurricanes v Crusaders
You can't blame the Hurricanes' fan-base for an element of defeatism - the Hurricanes have won just four of 21 matches between the two, with two draws and an abandonment - but the TAB seem to have taken this to extremes.
Recent meetings have been relatively tight. In 2009 the Hurricanes won 30-24 in Christchurch, the following year they drew in Wellington, while last year saw a post-earthquake abandonment and a tight 16-9 Crusaders win in the capital.
You suspect the Crusaders will abandon their kickathon against a back three including Andre Taylor, Reggie Wayne Jersey the Dallas Clark Jersey best broken-field runner in rugby at present, but they will continue with the twin-pivots of Tom Taylor and Dan Carter playing 10 and 12.
Like the TAB and most punters, you suspect the Crusaders might have a little too much tight-five grunt, but it shapes as a fascinating contest, particularly if it's fine.
It will be Carter's 100th Super rugby match.

"Here's one reason the rest of the rugby world thinks New Zealanders are, by and large, a conceited, thoroughly unlikeable bunch when it comes to all matters rugby.
"Delve deep into your imagination and put a Waratahs jersey on the Crusaders last Saturday night. Transport the game to the Sydney Football Stadium - now Dwight Freeney Jersey Allianz Stadium - and imagine how you would have felt if the Waratahs had put in 66 kicks in general play. Probably wouldn't have got past halftime, would you?
"Jeez, imagine the scorn you would have heaped on England if they'd scored 26 of 31 points via the kicking tee. Instead we had some of the finest rugby brains in the country wetting their pants about the Crusaders' performance (to be fair, that's par for the course).
"Pragmatic? Absolutely. An important win? You bet, perhaps even a season-defining victory.
"An advertisement for Antonio Gates Jersey the sport? Pull the other one."
3. Stat attack
To give some context around the remarkable try-scoring exploits of Chiefs' prop Sona Taumalolo, who has six tries in seven games, he has scored close to a third of tries scored by all the props in the competition. The Brumbies, Crusaders, Force, Hurricanes, Rebels, Sharks and Stormers have yet to have a prop cross the line, while the Highlanders, Lions, Reds and Waratahs have had one five-pointer from their props. The Cheetahs are the next most prolific team, , with Coenie Oosthuizen and WP Nel both crossing twice.
4. Money ball
Herald betting analyst Michael Guerin searches for weekly gems.
No matter how much you adore the twin torsos (SBW and Kahui) or cow bells, backing the Chiefs has traditionally been sports betting's Russian roulette.
But the boys from The Tron are the great moneymakers of Super rugby.
For the last two weeks they have paid over the odds against weaker teams - Force and Cheetahs - and that trend continues against the Sharks on Sunday.
The pair are evenly matched at $1.87 by the TAB, which Pierre Garcon Jersey is a good bet as the Chiefs are settled in South Africa while the Sharks have had to trek home after a muddling Australasian tour.
Win on Sunday and the Chiefs have the NZ Conference at their mercy so they are worth backing.
Punt watch: The TAB is offering a happy hour between 3-5pm on Friday for first try-scorer on that night's game. They have picked the wrong player to boost the odds for two of the last four weeks and lost plenty. Worth a look for amusement value alone.

5. Garden of Eden
The All Blacks might have a scarcely believable record at Eden Park, but it's been a graveyard for the Blues and Warriors of late. The Blues haven't won a game on the park since June, while the Warriors have lost both matches they've played on the hallowed turf.
So this week the cursed ground welcomes the Kiwis, whose Eden Park record is nought from two.
Good luck then, chaps ...
6. Say what?

Moala gets reward for hard work
When George Moala damaged his shoulder in a pre-season trial he thought his debut Super 15 season might be over before it had begun.
There was talk of an operation but Moala was determined to take his chances rehabbing the injury.
His persistence has worked and the 21-year-old will start for the first time tonight in a Blues jersey on the wing against the Highlanders in Dunedin.
He will mark All Black speedster Hosea Gear in one of the mini-duels, which will form part of this compelling contest.
The Blues are out of the race for a semifinal, cut Lynn Swann Jersey down by their own ineptitude as much as anything but Philip Rivers Jersey desperate to collect some credibility.
The Highlanders are coming off a bye and looking to reclaim the form they had in the early part of the Super 15.
Moala wants to show some of the ability which encouraged the selectors to pick him for the Blues after a mere seven games in Mike Wallace Jersey the ITM Cup for Auckland.
His speed and power were evident in that provincial series and the question now is whether he can take those skills to the next level.
Moala may be shy but he is confident he can make the grade. So, too, Rudi Wulf, who has been a mentor to the young Tongan all season but will be Ryan Mathews Jersey missing from this contest because of a shoulder injury.
"It's been a long time coming and hard with injuries but to get a start this game is great," Moala said.
He was hurt in a February trial game against the Hurricanes, when his shoulder bent backwards as he tried to offload in a tackle.
But anyone who has seen him benchpress 170kg in the gym knows he has recovered.
Even the Blues props struggle to match him and while Moala reckons he could push more, he knows he has to balance that power with work on his speed, agility and skills.
He is blessed with a strong physique like his father, Timote, who was picked for Tonga but bypassed rugby to raise and care for his family.
Moala's shoulder is fine now and he tested it for 20 minutes in his substitute beginning for the Blues last week against the Sharks.
He began making rugby progress at Tamaki College as a backup No 8 before he shifted to the outside backs where he now plays for his Grammar-Carlton club.
"They told me I was too fast for No 8 so they chucked me out into the backs," he said.
Moala is as quick as anyone in the Blues and likes to test his attacking talents against any defender. His style is unmistakable and so, too, his flowing rat's tail.
It has no family or religious significance, just a reminder of the days before he cut his bushy afro.
Moala wants to repay Wulf tonight for having the compassion and patience to nurture him this season.
"I was nervous and I hang around him all the time," he said. "I should be Vincent Jackson Jersey all right without him for this game."
Whether that applies to the Blues will be decided by mid-evening.
Under-seige coach Pat Lam has made several big calls for this match which will mark Luke Braid's debut as captain.
Lam has ignored Piri Weepu again, picked an under-performing Ali Williams and given new roles to Hadleigh Parkes at fullback and Benson Stanley on the wing.
Desperation or little alternative? It's probably a mix of both as the Blues head south to try to get their results graph going north.

It's all the same job, so let's try a reshuffle
Think Jonah Lomu if you want a poster boy for positional switches.
Ask Mike Catt and he will hold a different opinion about the man who provoked a telegram to the All Blacks at the 1995 World Cup: "Remember rugby is a team game so all 14 of you pass the ball to Jonah."
The one-time loose forward moved to wing and became the most terrifying Mike Webster Jersey force in world rugby with his brutal power and subtle touches.
Maybe the new All Black panel could use Victor Joe Greene Jersey Vito's power and skills on the wing, or suggest to Adam Thomson that a chunk of his best work comes on the flank so why doesn't he stay there.
Jersey numbers don't count as much in the modern game - once set pieces are finished, every player is expected to show a range of skills on attack and defence.
So Daniel Carter slipping out a place to second five-eighths for the Crusaders is not such a big deal. Not in the Super 15 anyway where he can rework his repertoire of skills..
Come test time, Carter is the best first five-eighths in the land. Full stop. End of that debate. But others might benefit from a change of duty.
It is not unusual, although the sight of All Black wing Joeli Vidiri moving into a test lineout role in Australia in the late 90s was a shade disconcerting.
Usually it is the backs who slip on an alternate jersey. Isaia Toeava kept the kit man guessing as he started in the 15, 14, 13, 12 and 11 roles for the All Blacks.
Tana Umaga, Glen Osborne, Leon Macdonald and Luke McAlister inhabited multiple positions; Mils Muliaina Mel Blount Jersey and Nick Evans dabbled in several Jack Lambert Jersey roles.
Christian Cullen and Jeff Wilson did too, but those changes at the 1999 World Cup did not bring the riches Lomu delivered at the previous tournament in South Africa.
Loosies like Michael Jones, Taine Randell, Thomson, Chris Masoe, Jerry Collins, Jerome Kaino and Kieran Read have swapped jobs while Reuben Thorne, Todd Blackadder, Troy Flavell and Jono Gibbes also played at lock.
Many would suggest experienced halfbacks such as Justin Marshall and Jimmy Cowan were loose forwards wearing the No 9 jersey.
The legendary Sean Fitzpatrick wore the black No 2, but was a wing of great menace.
Piri Weepu has moved from halfback to cover five-eighths in a test, one time flanker Eric Rush played wing for the All Blacks and Joe McDonnell swapped a midfield upbringing for propping duties.
New All Black coach Steve Hansen likes to tinker, he challenges rugby convention and he might come up with a novel selection against Ireland in June.
Sam Whitelock or Jason Eaton as blindside flanker perhaps, maybe Ben Franks Jerome Bettis Jersey at hooker or Aaron Cruden to cover halfback and five-eighths once more?

Rugby: Stormers win hits Reds hard
Queensland's backline injury curse plumbed new depths as the Reds' took another heavy blow with a 23-13 loss to the Stormers at Suncorp Stadium.
Rookie five-eighth Sam Lane suffered a season-ending knee injury and rising Wallabies centre Ben Tapuai broke his collarbone within the opening seven minutes in a nightmare start.
Inspired by veteran playmaker Peter Grant, the Stormers made Rocky Bleier Jersey the most Franco Harris Jersey of the damage to race up a 17-3 halftime lead before quelling a spirited Reds revival to become the first South African team to win in Brisbane in three years.
Queensland skipper James Horwill, who was also replaced with a shoulder problem, gave the 31,548-strong crowd hope when he barged over on the hour mark but the Stormers' outstanding defence held on.
Although they enjoyed breakdown and lineout superiority, it just wasn't the defending champions night as they also had a bonus point taken away when Grant kicked a penalty on fulltime.
Playing against many of his old Western Province teammates, Cape Town-schooled Lane ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament when his right knee buckled badly as he made a jinking run with his first touch of the ball.
He'd barely left the field before Tapuai was crunched in a big tackle by Juan de Jongh in the lead-up to the Stormers opening try to Gio Aplon and Terry Bradshaw Jersey a 10-0 lead.
After going into the match with a forwards-heavy 5-2 reserves bench, the Reds were Brett Keisel Jersey forced to reshuffle their backline and even had No.8 Radike Samo in the centres at one stage.
A fifth-choice playmaker due to injuries to Quade Cooper, Mike Harris, Ben Lucas and Jono Lance, Lane had done well to retain the No.10 jersey with Harris and Lucas making their returns from hamstring injuries.
Queensland rued a litany of missed chances with lock Rob Simmons knocking the ball on over the line just after halftime.
A try then would have made the score 17-10 but instead an off-side penalty soon after allowed Grant, who slotted five from five in an 18-point haul, to kick his side to a 20-3 lead.
Fullback Luke Morahan also tripped as he was chasing a deft Lucas grubber into the in-goal and winger Rod Davies earlier dropped a pass with the line open.
Grant set up Aplon for the first try and stood up Samo for the second as the Stormers' first-half Donovan McNabb Jersey play was in stark contrast to the off-key Reds.
