Lenovo's update to their 15-inch IdeaPad offers some solid features for a laptop that can be found for under $1000. Performance is good thanks to the new Core i5-2410M and NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics. This combined with a large hard drive and Blu-ray make it an excellent multimedia platform. The system is held back a bit by its slower hard drive and panel's typical resolution that limits HD media to 720p. Still, a good overall value for someone wanting a very versatile 15-inch laptop.
May 30 2011 - Lenovo's IdeaPad Y570 doesn't really look at all different from the past IdeaPad Y560 models. In fact, the exterior remains mostly unchanged. Internally, the system uses the new Intel 2nd generation Core processors which makes a huge impact on performance. Driving this model of IdeaPad Y570 is the Core i5-2410M dual core processor that offers superior performance from the past Core i5 even though this is the lowest with battery like Toshiba PA3191U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3166U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3331U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3098U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3084U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3250U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3356U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3291U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3591U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3757U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Qosmio F750 Battery version of the new Core i5. This combined with 4GB of DDR3 memory allow the system to handle just about any task that one might have for it without issue.
Storage features are one of the strongest points of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y570. It comes with a 750GB hard drive that provides a bit more than the 500 and 640GB drives found in many similarly priced laptops. The downside to this is the drive spins at a more sedate 5400rpm which gives it a bit slower overall feel than laptops using 7200rpm spin rate drives. Another nice touch for this version of the laptop is the inclusion of a Blu-ray combo drive. This allows the system to playback high definition Blu-ray movies as well as playback or record CDs or DVDs making it a very strong mobile multimedia platform.
The downside is the display for the IdeaPad Y570 doesn't support a full 1080p high definition video stream. Instead, Lenovo has opted to use a much more common 1366x768 display resolution that allows it to support 720p HD video. Those wanting to watch in the higher HD format will need to hook up an external display via HDMI. The display itself uses a glossy coating that can be difficult to use in certain light. The graphics system is a major change for Lenovo. While past versions have used the AMD Radeon, they have switch over to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics for the latest model. This is a relatively new processor that actually offers solid performance for 3D graphics and gaming easily up to the panels resolution.
As with the previous Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 model, the Y570 comes with a standard six-cell battery pack typical for most laptops in this size range. With the improved processor support, the battery life has improved slight to two and a half hours of DVD playback before going into standby mode. That is roughly fifteen minutes more than the past model. Now, Blu-ray playback will take more power and will yield roughly two hours. This pretty much falls in the average running time for a laptop in this class.
The keyboard deck has changed a bit on the IdeaPad Y570 compared to the past versions. The keyboard layout and design remains the same with the isolated key design that is very comfortable. The only real change is the movement of the left control key to be back on the outside rather than the function key of the previous model. The trackpad is the big change though. It features a larger surface area and a single rocker bar rather than the individual buttons from the past model. While the Y560's surface area was smaller, I much preferred the previous trackpad button layout.
