For today's SEL I will talk about word choice.
本日のＳＥＬは単語選択について話したいと思います。
英語の文章を書くとき、初心者の方でも上級者の方でも必ずと言って毎回困ることが、適切な単語選び（word choice：ワードチョイス）です。
単語のチョイスに困ったときいちばん楽な方法として、「同じ単語を繰り返して使う」という手段があります。
でもこれだと、自分の表現力が貧困だと思わてしまううえに、読み手にとっても読みにくい文章に仕上がってしまうので、できれば避けてほしいです。
下記の例文をご覧ください。

I never bought a lottery, but as I got extra income yesterday, I decided to buy it for the first time in my life. Two months later I received a phone call that informed me that I won 100 million yen, which was the first prize. I was happy when I notice that I'll get a 100 million yen cash. I told my friends about this and they also got happy because they knew I'll share some of the money with them. But when I was in the zenith of my happiness, the lottery organization gave me a call that killed my happiness. It told me that I was not the one who got the first prize, and also told me I didn't win any. I got unhappy after I hung up the phone.
読んでいて気付かれたかと思いますが、「嬉しい」を意味するhappy、happinessや「嬉しい」というこの単語と関わり合いのあるunhappyの単語がしつこく繰り返されているのが分かりますよね？
これだと読みにくいので、この文章の文脈に沿って単語選びをして書き換えてみましょう。

[. . .] I was ecstatic when I notice that I'll get a 100 million yen cash. I told my friends about this and they also got excited because they knew I'll share some of the money with them. But when I was in the zenith of my happiness, the lottery organization gave me a call that killed my joy. [. . .] I got sad after I hung up the phone.
最初の文章と比べてみて、同じ単語選択は"happiness"の一か所だけです。
僕自身は自分の英語力の感覚で②の文章に修正しましたが、単語を変える一番良い方法は、シソーラス（thesaurus：類義語辞典）を見ることです。
同じ"happy"でも３０以上類義語があるので、チョイスには困らないはずです。
一つ注意してほしいのは、シソーラスで調べた単語をそのまま使用するのではなく、使う前にその単語が本当に文脈に合った適切な単語なのかどうかをもう一度英和辞書でチェックするということです。
みなさんも赤線の箇所を留意した上で、さっそく今日からでもワードチョイスに挑戦してみてはいかがでしょうか？
