イタリアの名門一族メディチ家は、ルネサンスの都フィレンツェの支配者として、約三百年にわたってこの町に君臨し、都市の発展とルネサンス文化の創造に大きな役割をはたした。
商人として、銀行家として、政治家として、大パトロンとして、芸術家や学者たちの友人として、君主として、都市の建設者として、華やかな宮廷生活の主役として、あるいは冷酷非情な権力者として、メディチ家の人びとは、さまざまな形で都市フィレンツェの歴史と文化に深い関わりをもった。
メディチ銀行を大躍進させ市民からも敬愛された賢人コジモ・イル・ヴェッキオ、華麗な文化パトロンで詩人でもあったロレンツォ・イル・マニフィコ、メディチ家出身の最初のローマ教皇となったレオ十世、マキアヴェッリ的な絶対君主コジモ一世など、メディチ一族からは、強烈な個性と人間的魅力をもつ人物が多く生みだされている。

Foreword
Italy's renowned Medici family reigned over the Renaissance capital Florence about 300 years. Under its rule, the family devoted all its energy in flourishing the city and creating and developing the Renaissance culture.
The Medicis led the history and culture of Florence by playing various roles. The roles that they played were merchant, banker, politician, big patron, friend of artists and scholars, monarch, developer of the city, leading figure in the luxurious court life, or dictator.
Many people with strong personality and attractiveness were produced from this family. Those people were such as Cosimo the Elder, a wise man who expanded the business of the family's Medici Bank and was also loved by the Florentines, Lorenzo the Magnificent, a patron of splendid cultural activities and was also a poet, Pope Leo X, the first pontiff from the clan, and Cosimo I, the Machiavellian prince who possessed absolute power.
This book imaginatively portrays the entire history of the House of Medici by sufficiently including legendary tales and episodes.
