Canada's ambassador among 10 expelled by Turkey over letter calling for philanthropist's release

 
 
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Saturday he has ordered the foreign ministry to expel ambassadors from 10 western countries, including Canada, after they called for the release of philanthropist Osman Kavala. Kavala has been in prison since late 2017, charged with financing nationwide protests in 2013 and with involvement in a failed coup attempt in 2016. He denies the charges. called for a speedy resolution to Kavala’s case. Turkey’s foreign ministry called the statement “irresponsible.” Kavala was acquitted in 2020 of charges related to the protests, but the ruling was overturned this year and combined with another case related to the coup attempt. Human rights groups say the case is emblematic of a crackdown on dissent under Erdoğan. Turkey takes issue with 10 ambassadors, including Canada's, over support for jailed philanthropist

 
 
 

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for 10 foreign ambassadors to be declared persona non grata in his country, including the representatives from Canada, the U.S. and France. The news follows a statement from the ambassadors calling for the release of a jailed Turkish activist and philanthropist.

トルコのエルドアン大統領は23日、同国で拘束が続く実業家の釈放を求めた米独仏など10カ国の駐トルコ大使を「ペルソナ・ノン・グラータ（好ましからざる人物）」と呼び、追放を警告した。アナトリア通信が伝えた。

　エルドアン氏は外務省に早急な対応を指示したと述べた。追放の期限など詳細は明らかにしていない。 　欧米中心の駐トルコ大使10人は18日、慈善活動でも知られた実業家オスマン・カバラ氏の釈放を求める共同声明を発表。トルコ外務省が抗議した。 　カバラ氏は2013年の反政府デモを巡り起訴され、無罪判決を受けたが、別件で逮捕され、裁判が続く
