Scientists have solved an enduring mystery about Stonehenge, determining the place of origin of many of the megaliths that make up the famed monument in Wiltshire, England, thanks to a core sample that had been kept in the United States for decades.

英ストーンヘンジ、25キロ離れた場所から運搬　謎の一つ解明

何世紀にもわたって世界の科学者を困惑させてきた英国の世界遺産ストーンヘンジ。

 

このほど、この巨石がどこから運ばれてきたのか、研究者の調査で判明した。

 

ストーンヘンジがある場所から約25キロ離れたウェストウッズだ。 

 

何十年もの間、米国には記念に持ち帰られたストーンヘンジのかけらがあった。

 

 ストーンヘンジは英国のウィルトシャー州にあり、最新の研究により、

 

52個の巨石のうち50個が同じ場所から運ばれたことが分かった。 

 

ボーンマス大学の考古学教授、ティモシー・ダービル氏はこう語る。

 

 

「私たちは、科学的に非常にわかりやすいことをやっている。

 

ストーンヘンジの石を採取して、地質学的な分析をする。

 

石に含まれる微量元素をすべて測定する。

 

サーセン石は99％がシリカだ。

 

どこにでもある鉱石なので、分析するのが難しい」 

 

1950年代に石の補強を実施。

 

この際、ひび割れた巨石を安定させるため金属棒が挿入された。

 

当時、保存作業に関わった会社で働き、現場にいたロバート・フィリップスさんが

記念に許可を得て石の試料を持ち帰った。 

 

 

フィリップスさんは、1977年に米国に移住した。

 

その後2018年、研究のために英国に返すことを決めた。

 

彼は今年亡くなった。 

 

ストーンヘンジは英国で最も知られたランドマークの一つだが、建てられた目的はまだ、分かっていない。
