                                                    Discussion

The author collected male and female mosaic butterflies (here in after referred to as Gynandoromorph) on May 20, 2023. The right wing was female pattern and the left wing was male pattern. The collection location is the left bank downstream of the Sasai-Dam on the Iruma River in Sayama City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

First report on the Gynandromorph of Japanese Colias butterfly was written 130 years ago in 1893 by Leech.J.H, who observed speciments from Japan (Pryer’s Collection). *¹

Fifty years later, in 1942, Eizaburo YOKOTA reported on a gynandromorph with left female type and right male type (this is the opposite pattern to the left and right types of individuals examined by the author). *²

Later years, on July 21, 1952, Keiichi OMOTO collected a Gynandromorph with a left male type and a right female type at near Antaroma Station in Aibetsu Town, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido. *³

The following year, in 1953, Kazuo SAITO observed and examined an individual collected in Minamitsugaru Village, Aomori Prefecture, and wrote a report recognizing it as a Bilateral Gynandoromorph. *⁴

Only 4 cases have been reported in the 60 years since the report by Leech.J.H.

Since then, many Gynandoromorphs have been reported in Butterflies, Moths, Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Crustaceans, Birds, etc., and there are many images of them. However, to date, the author has not found any reports of Gynandoromorph of Colias erate poliographus Motschulsky.

Reports of Gynandoromorph of Colias erate poliographus Motschulsky are thought to be limited to fewer than 100 cases over the past 130 years.

In addition, the scientific name of the Japanese Colias butterfly is Colias erate poliographus Motshulsky, and the English name is Eastern pale clouded Yellow.

The scientific name of the Eurasian Colias is Colias hyale poliographus, and the English name is Pale clouded Yellow. The pattern is the same as, Japanese Colias but it is slightly smaller.
