直訳は「1個の腐ったりんごで、樽の中の全てのりんごが腐ってしまう」です。「rotten apple」や「bad apple」と同様に、悪いものが1つでもあると、周囲に悪影響を与えるという意味になります。これらの言い回しを用いて、「It takes one bad apple to spoil the whole barrel.」や「A rotten apple spoils the barrel.」とも使われる。
