With a new year about to begin, we have an opportunity to make fresh and more meaningful connections with the world around us. Language has always been an obstacle to forming new relationships. In light of the past year, learning a new one is a challenge worth tackling in the diverse promise of 2013.
For those studying English, there are a variety of websites that may useful. Below is a short description of four that may make your study efficient, effective and even enjoyable.
This website is pretty similar to Anki. It also tracks progress and will automatically design study sessions around your needs.
Instead of flashcards iKnow uses interactive lessons that combine audio, images, and short quizzes to help you learn more efficiently. iKnow currently has Chinese, SAT English, and Japanese language courses available on their website. Like Anki, their mobile-device apps will allow you to study English on the train or when you want to multi-task at lunch.
iKnow is limited to subscribers but you can trial it for free.
Livemocha is designed to put its users in touch with each other and create an online community that teaches itself. Because of this feature, it could easily be called the "Facebook of language learning".
On the website you will create a profile with a "target language" that you wish to learn as well as advertise which languages you already know.
You can be helpful and grade coursework submitted by others as well as have your own graded in this "community classroom". The more you grade and comment, the more points you will receive on your profile. These points can later be used to gain access to Livemocha courses which will help you with the vocabulary and grammar you need to improve your communication with other Livemocha users.
This is a collection of short videos on specific topics (grammar, pronunciation, etc.) in English.
This website is easy to navigate and the lessons are organized by difficulty. You can also interact and gain feedback from teachers if you have questions on their videos. Using this site is probably closest thing you can find to a traditional classroom.

The internet can help us improve the ways in which we learn. How we use our knowledge to think in 2013 is still to be seen.
"Of all the big ideas that have risen to the top of our discourse in 2012 and will have a significant impact in 2013, there are a few ideas in particular that stand out because they have become ascendant very quickly.
The argument for gay marriage as a right, for instance, has rapidly advanced in the court of public opinion and is also likely to win in court... in the face of a sea change in public opinion."
In this video, Professor Michio Kaku will explain the fundamentals of Physics. He simplifies the subject into the understanding of 4 important forces that are present in the Universe.

he discusses how in some situations a psychopath would be able to make efficient, life-saving decisions.
He goes on to further explain that their biological lack of empathy may be a benefit in certain critical situations. A psychopath, he says, wouldn't think twice about pushing a person in front of a trolley to save the lives of several people.
I will also discuss the "main idea" of Big Think videos and articles in English. I hope this will be helpful to everyone's study of the English language. I will try my best to express these ideas in Japanese, however, since my ability is very limited I hope you can forgive my poor use of it. In this blog I will also feature suggested material that is produced by Japanese authors and internet users. 日本語の表現で失礼な点がございましたら、お許しください。
All comments about the theme of the videos, articles, and suggestions to improve my Japanese are welcome. :-)
