They want Wednesday’s event to serve as a call to action.Ken Coopwood, vice president of diversity and inclusion at Missouri State University, said King’s speech can serve — again — as a catalyst for change.“It was a call to envision what could take place,” Coopwood said of the speech. “As a diversity educator, I’ve learned that what needs to take place is education — which King dubbed as the ‘great emancipator.’ ”Coopwood believes Springfield is “on the brink of significant demographic and structural changes,” and every citizen has a role to play in bringing that to fruition. He said the call to “continue meeting and collaborating” will only be enhanced by this event.“It’s all designed to empower and charge the city with taking actions,” he said.As part of the event, community and faith leaders will talk about King’s social justice work and why it continues to be relevant today.They will also engage in a symbolic “burial of hate” by placing a time capsule under a monument on the southeast corner of the square.
