Buyers looking for a midsize luxury sedan could be forgiven for limiting their search to the German contingent. After all, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz created this class and have been the benchmark ever since, despite impressive breakthroughs from American, Asian and other European automakers. But the 2017 Jaguar XF provides a very good reason for buyers to expand their options. The XF's wide aluminum structure makes it lightweight, fuel-efficient and responsive to driver commands. Its luxurious interior makes you forget about time spent in traffic. And on the open road, it cuts a dashing British figure.
New for 2017 is a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that will broaden the XF's appeal to luxury car buyers who prioritize fuel economy. With over 300 lb-ft of torque waiting for you when you step on the gas pedal, the XF diesel doesn't sacrifice thrills for savings either. Jaguar has not yet announced the fuel economy of the new engine, but we can assume that it will get around 30 mpg to match the offerings from Audi and BMW.
The new diesel engine is the perfect complement to the XF's existing powerplant, a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 offered in two versions - 340bhp and 380bhp. There is certainly plenty of power, but you also get a solid 30 mpg on the highway with standard rear-wheel drive.

What makes the 2017 Jaguar XF stand out is the emotional impact it has. Step inside the cabin, for example, and you'll see the ignition key button pulsing red like a heartbeat; press it and the rotary gearshift button will rise up from the center console. Of course, what the Germans may lack in dramatic presentation, they make up for with clinical precision, as in the impeccably designed Audi A6, the consistently competitive BMW 5 Series, and the ultra-tough Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which has also been redesigned for 2017.
The American Cadillac CTS vSport is priced lower than the performance-oriented XF S and offers more power and superb handling. But if you're interested in Jaguar's signature combination of refinement and speed, you won't be able to resist the 2017 XF.
Standard safety features on the 2017 Jaguar XF include stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a rearview camera on all models except the base model. As mentioned above, several other safety technologies are included on the R-Sport and S trims, while the more advanced Driver Assistance package is optional on these trims and the Vision package enhances the safety of the base Premium and Prestige trims.

Edmunds expert rating
The 2017 Jaguar XF combines sophisticated design with sporty handling in a midsize luxury sedan that is one of the best in its class. The classy interior is soothing, and the supercharged V6 engine delivers thrills. All-wheel drive is available as an option for all-weather driving, as well as a new diesel engine for those concerned about fuel economy. Whichever configuration you choose, the XF is an attractive alternative to established luxury sedans in its class.
Driving.
For the 2016 XF redesign, Jaguar added lightweight aluminum to the body and panels, giving the car a more agile and athletic look. Add to that the precise and light steering, and you have a mid-sized luxury sedan that feels like a smaller model from the driver's seat.

Equipping the XF with the optional Adaptive Suspension Dampers offers a choice between a sportier ride and handling, or a comfortable, relaxed ride. Not that you need these fancy dampers; on the contrary, the XF's standard suspension setup provides a nice balance between athleticism and isolation.
The supercharged V6 provides confident acceleration in standard and S trims, as well as ample torque throughout the rev range. However, some sports sedan buyers might expect a richer sound, as we found that this V6 sounds less energetic than the Jaguar F-Type sports car. Nevertheless, the 2017 XF has enough distinctive British style and character to make it an attractive alternative to its mid-range rivals.
