At first I was afraid to touch it for fear of getting it dirty. Much of the material comes from the central section of my book The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century — chapters on music in Stalin's Soviet Union, FDR's America, and Hitler's Germany in the 30s and 40s. The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century was published in 2007 in the US, and has subsequently been translated into a number of other languages. The Rest Is Noise by Alex Ross - dustjacket blacklight before. I do feel that the subtitle "Listening to the 20th Century" is misleading. But I must make an exception for Alex Ross's The Rest is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux). The dust jacket is a brilliant white - so pristine. Alex Ross began writing for The New Yorker in 1993 and became the magazine's music critic in 1996. Finally got around to it: March 2011.
