コヘレトの言葉 (1章2-7節)
コヘレトは言う。
なんという空しさ、 なんという空しさ、すべては空しい。
太陽の下、人は労苦するが、すべての労苦も何になろう。
一代過ぎればまた一代が起こり、永遠に耐えるのは大地。
日は昇り、日は沈み、あえぎ戻り、また昇る。
風は南に向かい北へ巡り、めぐり巡って吹き
風はただ巡りつつ、吹きつ続ける。
川はみな海に注ぐが海は満ちることなく
どの川も、繰り返しその道程を流れる。

勉強しなくてはならない (cannot help・・)
英文の作法
「笑わないではいられなかった」にたいする２通りの構文は、I could not help laughing. と I could not but laugh. 意味上 cannot but laugh = cannot help laughing だが、前者は今日では古めかしい表現とされている。後者の方がより力強い感じがあるのでこの方を使うことをこころすべきだ。特に、I cannot help loving you. (君のこと愛さざるを得ない。) ー の場合はことさらである。
cannot help doing - からの慣用表現の help は avoid (・・を避ける) の意味で「それは避けられない」うなわち「やむを得ない, 仕方ない」の意味となった。It can't be helped. も同じ意味。また、会話表現の中で You cannot help it. の形でも使われる。
ただし、「昨夜は勉強せざるを得なかった」と言うときに、このイデオムは使えないことに注意。I couldn't help studying last night. とするとかってに体が勉強する感じになって不自然だからであり、正しくは I was compelled to study last night. とすべきだ。(MD 英語、古藤晃/河合塾講師)
上の例文はいずれも、cannot help (+ 名詞・動名詞) のもの。とかくややこしいのが外国語の語法であるが、けして気落ちすることはいらない。救いも決まって用意されているのだから。
