An Ideal Rose ・・・
An Ideal Rose for me.
A couple of days ago a famous weblog written by a rosarian(horticulturist) I respect presented an interesting article. It was titled "One and Only".
It was about what would be your only one choice if you had to make a decision to choose one rose to grow.
Of course your choice will change depending on the environment you are able to grow the rose.
To be realistic my environment would be a potted rose being raised at a small porch.
So my requirements would be・・・
1. very fragrant
2. vigorous and disease-free
3. free-flowering through the year
4. each flower last long
5. short shrub type(height under 1.5M)
6. gorgeous large flowers
And my choice was "Rosalind(ロザリンデ)".
This pink rose has a hint of lilac color and gradually pales to lovely soft pink. Each flower last quite long comparing to the others. Worthy of special mention is the strong mixture fragrance of fruit and myrrh.
A New Challenge
A New challenge to hybridizing my original rose.
Actually I have been challenging from two years before.
My first year couple of pollination succeed and I was able to see the hips grow larger.
But during the seasons the hips turned brown and fall off one by one.
Some of the parent plants were under powdery mildew and believe this was the major reason for the failure.
Last year was also not so successful but I was lucky to be able to harvest the hips from one tree.
I planted the seeds this Feb. and they started to sprout after April.
The bellow are pictures of their first flower.
I have to be thankful that most of them are fragrant and have the potential to show cup shape and rosette shape in the future.
The symbols on the label are numbers for me to manage the young rose plants.
The first rose hips I harvested.
The first sprout.
Replanted in a pot.
The first flowers.
The last plant is very unique the leaves are narrow shaped and the flower is like a firework shape.

My first Rose.
My first Rose.
Beside of a miniature size rose, the first roses I grew were English Roses.
Actually I was temporary living in the states and was able to order directly from DA(David Austin) United States shop.
My first choice was "Tamora" and "Brother Cadfael".
Unfortunately "Tamora" was already out of stock and my second choice "Carding Mill" was delivered.
This turned out to be a lucky happening, this rose was a limited release for the DA United States.
Everything was new and read every line of the guide book.
Soaked the bare root roses in a bucket of water overnight, and planted in an approximately 50cm diameter pot(These days the maxim size pot I use is 30cm, ) .
Both roses bloomed through out the season and I was impressed for the fragrant and large size flowers,
5 years has passed and unfortunately I have lost the pictures for both roses.
I had a chance to grow "Brother Cadfael" again.
Crazy for Roses
Crazy for Roses.
This should be the best title for my diary.
I would like to start writing about roses I grow and hybridize.
I have been growing all kinds of plants from when I was a kid.
My preconception for roses were plants that are hard to manage.
I happened to buy a potted miniature size rose at Safeway five years ago.
It happened to be a robust plant.
Then I found that I was able to order English Roses from the nursery.
But thats another long story.
To be continued in the next diary.
The picture is one of my favorates.
"J-Sweat Dream"
It has a very strong nice fragrant.
The color of this rose starts with yellow, gradually fades to ivory white.
The form of the flower is peony-like or you can say camellia-like.
See-ya (^O^)/.
